Maybe my memory is getting a little bit hazy, but as far as I can recollect the biggest mistake of the DPJ in 2011, 2012 is being directly responsible for the 3/11 earthquake and the aftermath.

That's largely a product of the outsized representation that rural regions have in the Diet, and LDP catering to them. Abe's own seat from the Yamaguchi 4th District is currently part of a voter disparity lawsuit, which means that it's likely that they won't be able to have a run-off election for it anytime soon.

For some good insight on the pathetic opposition parties, read this:
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/...r-17289245.php

An excerpt:

'Hopeless': Japan's weak opposition no match for ruling LDP
Ahead of Sunday's parliamentary elections, nearly a dozen opposition parties are trying to topple the Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled, almost without interruption, since the end of World War II.

These include a party whose sole platform is a call to boycott public broadcaster NHK, and a party whose trademark is burdock roots and says the vegetable can beat bad guys.

Oh, yeah: There’s also the fractured, bickering main opposition party, which has failed for years to put up a viable candidate for prime minister.

These parties, though wildly different in their policies, share a common trait: They have little chance of upsetting the behemoth LDP, especially as Prime Minister Fumio Kishida maintains stable support ratings and carefully avoids divisive issues ahead of the vote.

The dominance of the LDP is taken for granted here, and Japanese opposition parties, experts say, are more concerned about survival than finding a mutual platform that could viably challenge the LDP. Voters, meanwhile, seem to prefer the stability of the LDP.

This article gives some details, but now that the Moonies are being named, I'm sure more links will soon be uncovered.

But here's a nice little nugget from 2006 (back when Abe had his first tenure as PM) found though the power of Google:

Fascinating reading those articles. Thanks for posting.

yah. I'm blown away at the cults in Japan after doing a tiny bit of research. At least I know where the xenophobic attitudes come from on the extreme end of things. Yikes.

The biggest is likely the election being held today. As the suspect put it,"The Unification Church has close ties with Abe. That's why the police can't even investigate."

They can't keep the details away from the public forever, but they can do so at least long enough to avoid poisoning the well against LDP votes.

This is truly unbelievable stuff. Very sad.

And there we have it. Unification Church, aka the Moonies. Now publicly disclosed as the organization the shooter was referring to. Fascinatingly crazy stuff! At least they are owning up to it. But somehow that makes it… even worse. As though they are so proud, they don’t care.

This article pretty much sums it all up:

That story in Shingetsu News story is a must read for anyone to understand Japan's deep links to the Moonies. Very eye-opening. Thanks for sharing!

-one point of relevance not mentioned in it though was that Kishi (Abe's Class A war criminal grandfather) had the charges against him dropped by the US during its post-WW2 occupation so that they could eventually install him as Prime Minister. The US loved his anti-communist fervor.

Policeman guarding Japan ex-PM Abe distracted by bicycles and missed suspect

Sounds like a nightmare situation for a police officer. There were so many moving parts that I could see in the videos, any one of which represented a potential threat.

In one of the pictures of the takedown I saw an elderly gentleman on a bike pedaling just behind the shooter. Nara being what it is, it is not at all surprising.

Interesting background.

Of course the Moonies weren't just screwing things up in Japan. A cousin got married in the 1980 mass NYC wedding. It did not turn out well, and the guy ended up getting arrested years later for child abuse.

Unfortunately, the rather unique Japanese cultural desire to conform and comply at all costs makes fertile ground for the cults....
