If you’re using miles (at least this is the case with BA Avios for JAL flights) it’s pretty generous giving 2 x 23kg bags in economy.
If not, the takkyubin delivery service can iron out any problems.

Same if using JAL's Japan Explorer fare, or both JAL and ANA apply international baggage allowance to domestic sectors on a single ticket I believe. ANA does the same for their Experience/Discover Japan fares.

Yes, ANA domestic and international baggage allowances are the same when using ANA tickets that include international flights, even on free domestic flights. Visitors do benefit from having all sectors on one booking.

Based on my experience,

Nov 2019: ANA Experience Japan Fare, Baggage: 2PC (i.e. 2 X 23kg)

May 2019: JAL Japan Explorer Pass, Baggage: 2PC (i.e. 2 X 23kg)

These fares must be booked separately on their websites so they cannot be single ticket with your international travel. From 5500 - 10000 yen one way.

Only thing to be aware of if going down this route (as MrLapLap discovered today) is that the Check In staff at the front line of JAL’s network aren’t all aware of this. Took him a while to have his second case accepted, they even asked him to go take a seat whilst they had the matter scrutinised by supervisors at FUK.
All resolved, thankfully he was in no hurry.
