Seen at 7-Eleven

Suntory Tennensui (bottled water):

1 liter bottle: 168 yen
2 liter bottle: 98 yen

When I asked a staff member about this, she said "The one liter bottle is more expensive because it's a more convenient size."

Mind. Blown.

That kind of sums up convenience stores in a nutshell.

How much was the 500ml (or 550ml or however much they hold) bottle?

Didn't see it at this store. I have seen it in vending machines for 110 yen.

Is it possible that

High demand = High price

Low demand = Low price

????

I think I tend to buy 1 L bottle over 2 L bottle, simply because typical household refrigerators in Japan 2 L bottles tend to be just too big, will not fit into a shelf on a refrigerator door, etc. I think I find 1 L bottle to be more convenient because of that.

Un-scientific singular data point, me, chose 1 L bottle.

You just noticed this now? Been like forever....don't you recall the vending machines in the early 90's that sold the mini-cans of cola for more than the "regular" size versions ?

I often see that 2L Tennensui at essentially the same price as their 500mL pet bottle. In the US, I often see the Arrowhead 3L bottle priced less than their 1.5L. Mysteries of pricing.

Bigger item same price as a smaller portion of that item is one thing (Mcdonald's is doing that now with French Fries) Bigger item much cheaper than the smaller portion is another.

Just checked at Lawson. 550 ml is 105 yen. 1L and 2L same price as 7-Eleven.

2L bottle was prob on sale.

It's like the half-dozen, dozen and dozen & half egg carton game. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy 18 eggs, but you'll still see the shopper buy a dozen either cause they don't pay attention, can't do math or simply don't want 6 more eggs.

At the gym they sell a 500 ml bottle of Crystal Geyser for 100 JPY and a 1L bottle for 110 JPY.....Why not buy a canteen and put a water filter system in at the house ? Lots of biz-bag friendly canteens for sale here.

I found this, but I'm not completely convinced:

http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp...l/q14110116159

In summary:
  • Smaller bottles cost more to make than larger ones
  • Most supermarkets only carry two liter size, so that is where intense competition exists among makers, who are willing to sell for a loss to increase market share.

There is no loss on a 100 JPY 2L bottle of water.......just not as much profit. The container costs are negligible as are the water costs.

ペットボトル(容器)原価
500ml→50~60円
2l →60~70円

That's "negligible"?
