Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I know its not hard if they want to but they have a BOGO free night at the Pen and they cant be bothered to utilize it... and none of the IC in tokyo is really fascinating (I stay because its "free" but i'd much rather stay at the Hilton where i get FF rate and free breakfast now (+1 is Dia)

the most valuable thing in the bar is the 50mL yamazaki and maybe the XO (that they would actually consume) so i cant convince them with monetary reasons.

maybe i will just stay under her folio without her being present, but in that case i dont see whats the point getting RA (except for the ICs that gives bennies to award stays and wouldnt rescind them when i stay the night without her)- there's no upgrade when they stay at the residence anyways.

I think it's Jan only. Remember, there are a couple of threads on RA renewals for a few years now, and nobody's ever gotten renewed mid-year.

Am with you that renewal is likely only end of qual year. If someone qualifies first time or requalifies after previous downgrade (happened in my case) then the "upgrade" to RA did happen throughout the year in the past. Would be terribly silly to make someone wait for benefits another few months, but hey this is IHG and nonsense can go pretty far around here.

If it's like that don't bother to do extra stays etc. Seems like they could easily afford even the 0.5l bottle and value convenience more than anything. So no use to chase RA. If it is granted great, if not then so be it

Yes it can. Rules trump anything with IHG. I just checked in for a week-long stay at IC SYD, and they wouldn't give me anything beyond a room next to the elevator, and after I asked for one of their suites (which I've had before), they huffed and they puffed and they offered me either a Harbour view room (of the same size), or a upcharge to go to the suite. Lots of RAs every day, they say, so have to be fair, so no suite for me.

So I explained to them that the rules say it's a two-level upgrade, but the rest is at the hotel's discretion - something they're obviously not willing to work too hard at, so I cut my stay after a day and walked out. Let's see if someone else likes my money around here. I'm so tired of this nonsense. Sigh.

thats whats im partly thinking. its more like what i can milk out of it but i dont think id push it either... unless its convinient to push the few nights of IC. in osaka buying what u actually want is convinient too. 7-11 is just around the corner

Hi folks,
Heard an interesting rumor from the lead concierge at the IC Willard in DC--he mentioned that new RA criteria may include stays at NINE different IC properties and a F&B minimum threshold in addition to number of nights/spend. Anyone else heard this too?

Concierge will never know something like that in advance, and doubtful the'll know afte the fact either

F+B min spend won't happen, i spend more per night on m non-entry-cat IC rooms in mostly pricier locations, than many will on a basic cat room f+b together. Common sense (not that IHG are known for that) means unlikely my dollars spend at IC's without regular f+b component will lose me RA status on greater total spend than guest spends less than me gets it due to some meals.

Same 9 diff IC;s, too many for those who who stay just in Europe where it is one IC per country, eg London. Amsterdam, unlike in USA or China

Sounds silly. Though I could see how a wider spread of IC stays might help convince managers/owners to adhere to whatever enhancements to the scheme IHG is attempting to promote.

Oddly a couple of conversations with people who do contribute to internal discussions on benefits revealed some will to introduce lifetime RA, though the caveat was a minimum age requirement to limit the lifetime element, rather like Lufthansa's take on the issue. The same people viewed the "not on point stays" policy as cheap and mean - but i have to say I've only witnessed its implementation with regards to minibar use.

I'm pretty sure nothing will happen in my lifetime , but it was heartening to hear progressive views from management, although I have no idea how widely held those views are.

For the record, I was not the one who raised these issues in the conversations.

I hope there not going to shake it up again, I have just joined the RA club and have really enjoyed it this year so far, It fit's nicely in to my travel patterns and the fact it is revenue based rather than stays based really suits me as I'm not a business traveller.
