Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

yeah, i had a US$2000 stay at IC Grand Parnas show as US$46 in qualifying spend. this has happened previously as IHG IT is crap, but given it seems $10k is a hard line now, i'm going to call to make sure it's counted properly. basic things they should be able to fix..

undoubtedly Russian collusion

I think the difficulty in understanding the poster's comments is in the praise heaped on the wider but under-powered Spire programme.
they could solve the limited footprint issue, if they did, as others have previously commented, expand to include Kimpton, Regent, Hualuxe, and even maybe Crowne Plaza, and Indigo.

i can't see any downside, and lots of upside for IHG.

Let's face it, many RA's are staying with other hotel groups in locations where they don't have an IC.

So why not try to capture the business? for what a double upgrade, gratis club, minibar, and earlier check in/late check out?

Hi all, another RA newb question for you:

I've got approx 1 million IHG points and want to take my family to Paris next year. I should be getting RA in January (already have $20k spend and 60 IC nights in 2018). I'll be booking 3 rooms for 3 nights each at the IC Paris LeGrand in May. Am curious if any of you've had your RA benefits extended to family members staying in different rooms if all of the rooms are in your name?

hey,

if the points are in the same account, you can only book 1 room per hotel per night per account.

In My Experience only one room will get the RA benefits. Please note that upgrades and club lounge is not guaranteed on Award nights...

Note RA benefits, like Ambassador benefits do not apply to award nights. I have had a second booked room treated as if booked by Ambassdor ie upgraded/fruit/4pm checkpit etc (less than my own RA upgrade, no foc lounge) on both paid and award nights as a regular here at IC-PLG

Although I personally find IC-PLG generous as a semi-regular RA guest here, even on my own award stays (I have paid nights booked in non base rooms too which is probably important), I know I get treated better as returning paying RA than if I was a never before seen RA on a free night who may not return and give hotel paid nights. IC-PLG just gets too many Amb/RA's who never stay as paid guests booking here on award nights.

For a new guest (RA) if booking a basic room on points (as it is award) then even as RA are not actually entitled to most Amb/RA benefits even on RA's own room (no upgrade, no lounge, no 8am checkin, no free film), in reality this leaves on award nights just i)free internet ii)4pm checkout iii)Amb gift iv)fruit+water+snack choice

However I believe as a non-regular RA on award booking at IC-PLG, you'll very likely still get on your own RA's room the usual Room Upgrade (but no foc lounge access), and on a second room a +1cat room upgrade, but remember base 2cats at IC-PLG whilst nicely furnished are very small 18m (base room) or so and lack views and similar 20-22m for +1cat up from base room.

I'll be booking 3 rooms for 3 nights each at the IC Paris LeGrand in May. Am curious if any of you've had your RA benefits extended to family members staying in different rooms if all of the rooms are in your name?
I took some friends to IC PLG about 3 years ago as RA on a paid stay. I was upgraded to a Junior suite and the other 2 rooms were upgraded to some kind of Opera view room. Lounge access comped for all rooms.
Things may well have changed since, however.

Benefits are only good for your room and I would expect not an aweful lot in terms of an upgrade on an award stay and no upgrade whatsoever for your companions having booked award stay. Considering that an award night in Paris in a basic room is 70k points you might wish to consider exchanging 265k points for 1000 USD Award prepaid Mastercards allowing you to book the room category you wish. My corporate rate is sometimes as low as 250 EUR and a revenue stay on such "low" rate paid via an Award MasterCard still is a revenue stay with all benefits. If you stay includes weekends I would further consider opening IHG accounts for further family members and upgrade them to Ambassador. The Ambassador Free Weekend voucher is pretty good value in Paris and you could even book a room including vlub access. Its all a bit more work than booking straight forward award nights but you are free to book better room categories and negotiate a good deal with the hotel (what you cannot do that easily when simply going via the website.

If you are satisfied with the 18 sqm basic room, then 70k points per night might be the better deal. If you are longing for better rooms, than cash value via the Award MasterCards can be by far better value as this hotel has tons of room categories. Upgrade to accounts to Ambassador will cost you USD 200 each, however, the free weekend night voucher in Paris can easily be worth 400 EUR or even 1000 EUR, depending on the room type, and book the room/suite you want and get a one category upgrade. Then use the Award MasterCards for payment. I hope this gives you food for thought.

Oh yes, they have. In particular if it comes to club access. I still do not have any issues to get a total of three people into the lounge, as this is two registered hotel guests plus one allowed guest - so three single travellers staying in three different rooms should work too. But an entire family of six or so will be more of an issue.

I had to call Amb services today due to a stay that didn't post correctly. The Philippine lady said, for the first time in my memory, thank you for being a Royal Ambassador since 2001. I wasn't aware it had been 17 years already, but it's good that they are keeping track. Now I wonder if it will go in my favor for a renewal. I spent most of this years travels in countries that don't have any IHG so I'm likely to fall a bit short of 100,000 QP's.

There were 6 of us on that stay, too, but a lot has changed since then. Historically, this property has always been one of the most generous to RA's, even on award stays, but apparently this has now changed for the worse. (

Just got a email from IHG; did anyone else get this? (as previously posted, I expect to be first time RA next year as I've got $20k in IC spend and about 60 IC nights.
Curious to see why they added the random Kimpton stay requirement?

The key wording, which confirms some of our fears is "Mini-bar Credit".
The stripping away of RA benefits continues unabated. What will they "enhance" for 2020?

I got exactly the same email. I am above 10K$ in IC spend this year already.
If this is expected next year it is great news. No need to stay at mediocre ICs during the year. Just spend a few nights in good ICs towards the end of the year.
This is the IHG way of building loyalty.

I got this email as well, but the Book Now is a 404 link. Anyone else have the same?
