Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Posting to all of you RA's from a hopeful that's trying to hit this elusive RA status next year. Here's where I'm at today:

Currently Spire Amb
56 nights in IHG, 16 of which are IC
An additional 22 nights booked at ICs this year

End of year should land around 90 IHG/40IC nights with about $40k IHG spend/$20k IC spend across 7 IC properties

Think I've got a shot? My fear is that my IHG stays/revenue won't factor in (I was staying in Seattle and Charlotte often, where there's no IC).

Also, does RA status get awarded mid-year or is it always at the end of the calendar year?

The last RA enrollments and renewals based on criteria 'IC qualifying net spend >= 10,000 USD' were done both on 4th Jan 2017 / 2018 at ca. 4.30 pm UTC+1.

Since the status has been extended this year to the end of January 2019, it may be that evaluation will begin somewhat later. Nobody knows.

In conversation with a fairly senior GM recently who seemed fairly clued up, there are significant changes on the way to RA one of which will be elimination of the complimentary minibar.

Standardisation seems to be the key. I have to say I left feeling rather depressed. Especially since I have hit my $10k IC spend already.

Not doubting the accuracy of your information, but lmao, what is left of RA when even stripping minibar?!

Not even bf is guaranteed.

Interesting. I’ve always been under the impression that everyone is kept in the dark about upcoming changes, so I’ve never particularly given a lot of weight to rumours - i’ve heard MANY things over the years, few of which have ever turned out to be true.

If that’s the case, though, count me gone - I’m at $15K this year but I won’t bother renewing unless the new benefits are so good that they’ll make the reductions worth it. I don’t need another Platinum status in a program - I’ll happily revert to my other hotel programs.

The minibar is a fun gimmick when I'm traveling with family or friends, but the 3$ Coke that I sometimes enjoy while on business trips is not really a deal-breaker for me. Give me complimentary breakfast on all hotels, including the ones that doesn't offer Club Lounge and / or implement Club Life Experience at the same Club-less properties, and they can take away both the minibar and free movie for all I care.

Only paid qual rate IC brand (room and F+B) counts. In 2016 and 2017 empirically usd10,000++ spend needed.

No requirement for nn nights or 3 IC's any more. eg 4nights in one IC at usd2500++ would get you RA for 2019

Alas non-IC HI/CP/indigo/etc spend is ignored for RA qualification metic

this is not written in stone, just an assumption

details of exactly what it takes to qualify for RA are not published, so it is anybody's guess

No, this is pretty solid info based on a number of renewals and non-renewals in the last 2 years.

Cant guarantee it will remain so, of course, but at least there’s some consistency in the last two years.

My response was that often the club tended not to have hours that worked for me when I am working so the minibar was one of the few real benefits. I would consider Marriott style drink vouchers for the bar (which is sort of the direction I sensed but wasn't told) to be a significant step down. Although I can see an aim of trying to drive more revenue by putting customers in proximity with F&B options.

There seemed to be some move afoot to more recognition in other brands too whatever that amounts too

Or to extend that to a true reductio ad absurdum, one stay at USD10000 gets you in, while 90 nights at USD110 a night wouldn't keep you in RA clover.

Truth is we really don't know the checks put in place around the (largely) accepted 10K base since the debacles of the last two end of years. I think the penny dropped that someone spending 50+ nights in Intercontinental hotels, probably expects a little more than pat on the back and the invitation to pay for an Ambassador card.

As for the other brands not counting, anecdotal evidence - including my own - suggests there's been quite a cut back in Ambassador stays at Holiday Inns etc. The result might be subtle in overall figures, but it's a trend that should have been picked up, and even IHG revenue folk might have worked out they are putting out a strange message to members.

Feb next year I will be spending around $11k minimum for my trip and I am faced with a choice. 1) I can book a very nice CP for $12k or I can book a mediocre IC for $13-14k. Now my trip consists of booking multiple rooms and is not just for the one/two (although if we go to the IC, I cover the additional). Therefore, does anyone know if I am likely to get RA if I do go and book the IC or if it is unlikely owing to it being spread across multiple rooms? Additionally, if multiple rooms are ok, would my CP spend cover it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You won't get any RA benefit on the proposed stay, so the status is only going to be useful if you routinely stay at IC in the future.

For occasional IC stays it can be less expensive, less trouble all round, simply to purchase Ambassador membership and buy up to the level of comfort and amenities you want. Getting Club access at $50 or so on the nights you really want it can be a lot easier than chasing the uncertainties of RA membership.

If you know you will be happier, more comfortable at the CP, it seems crazy to pay more to stay elsewhere and be less comfortable

imho the stupid part of making RA cycle Jan-Dec is that zero benefit for rest of calendar year spending 10k++ early in year, as Ambassador upgrade to Royal will only occur annually circa 3rd January each year.

if you book multiple rooms, then probably only 1x room/night is qualifying night and receiving EQP points, but you can earn EQPs for F+B for multiple rooms charged to primary room. I can't see it being worth it. Remember you also need but Ambassador pre-stay for usd150/200, but on the bright side you'd get a) 1cat upgrade but only one room b) bogo cert for free weekend night

Whilst IHG Corporate could be tracking actual IC $$$ spend (which would include non-qual rate spend etc), my personal bet would be IHG Corporate instead track IC EQPs instead whereby IC hotel has already worked out if qual/non-qual spend for IHG.

I have always made sure I exceed the empirical us$10k++ by 20% or o minimum as
i)IHG could increase target meaning I'd lose RA status the following January
ii)If RA status lost come January, by say paltry 500usd, you have to wait for 12months to requal, staying at IC's as plain Ambassador, something longterm ex-RAs are unlikely to do. In the past you could simply spend extra IC nights after RA downgrade to regain almost immediately(pre Jun2016) but not anymore
