HIX Harlow UK

- What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum (Ambassador)

- Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes, booked on Points Breaks for 5k points/night. Hotel is still reasonably new and met expectations.

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Standarrd HIX Double, received the same

- How are the rooms?
Modern HIX style. Nothing exceptional either on the positive or negative size.

- How is the exec. lounge?
N/A

- What was good and what was bad?
Good:
-Hotel is still fairly new, has a nice modern feel
-Breakfast was pretty well organised. Standard HIX UK choice, constantly be replenished.
-Handy for the M11/J7 (~5 mins drive)
-Free Parking (for some, see below)

Bad:
-There is a free car park, but its only got 15 spots. If you enter the park and there is no spot you can't get out because there is a barrier. The barrier does not have an intercom to the front desk so you need to either call the hotel or walk round to reception for the code. There is an alternative car park behind the hotel. Its a private pay and display multi-story which the hotel has a negiotiaed rate with (3/night). Its an odd arrangement because you are told not to buy a ticket, but at the same time the hotel does not provide anything to put in the windscreen.
-The access paths to the MSCP all smell like a toilet
-Harlow town centre is pretty run down and in need of some investment.

- Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Yes, if I needed to be in the area. 5k on points was a good deal, although the standard rates are not that high either.

What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum

Were you happy with the hotel/stay?

Yes - very convenient for late arrivals into airport

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?

Booked King Bed Deluxe room using free night award from PC Visa. Received upgrade to very spacious king bed suite without asking (reservation showed upgrade night before arrival).

How are the rooms?

Fantastic -- didn't care for the sofa but very large, with a huge bathroom.

How is the exec. lounge?

Don't know; not given access.

What was good and what was bad?

Good: Location, suite upgrade, quiet and clean room.
Bad: Instant coffee in room, electrical outlets at desk didn't work.

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?

Definitely.

What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum

Were you happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked king bed premier room using PC points, received upgrade to king bed junior suite (which was large for a junior suite).

How are the rooms?
Quite large, clean, but had a smoky smell. Room was in the corner of the building and had many windows along both exterior walls. Overall pleased.

How is the exec. lounge?
Don't know; not given access.

What was good and what was bad?
Good: Location, suite upgrade, quiet and clean room.
Bad: Instant coffee in room, smoky smell.

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Redeemed 35K points/night for room that would have cost >280 SGD (about 220 USD), so fairly good value. Yes, I would return.

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Standard, received upgrade to Lakeside Access (not handicapped access but walk out access to the lake & beach)

How are the rooms?
Average

How is the exec. lounge?
N/A but received coupons for two free drinks in bar.

What was good and what was bad?
Pros: Had small patio with table & two chairs. Literally, just walk about 10 steps to the beach. Great view of the lake. Nice 32" tv & dvd player. Refrigerator & Microwave in all rooms. On-site restaurant has great prices, average tasting food.

Cons: Minor things--tile in bathroom could have used a better cleaning (found a few stray hairs in shower) also tiles could use a new grout job; Towels were worn; hair dryer useless.

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
This property currently is on an IHG Points Break for stays through October. So at 5,000 points, this is one of the best values out there!!! I stayed a Friday & Saturday Night and the current discounted rate (ie, AAA) is $150+/night. I highly recommend this property. There are 412 lakes within a 25 mile radius. 412, not a typo! Peak fall foilage will be in the area in the next couple of weeks. I will return if I get the chance!

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Standard, received Executive.

How are the rooms?
Sizeable and now include (at least Exec rooms) free mini-bar with still and sparking water, coke, OJ, peanuts and a Toblerone bar. ^
Plats get a free drink at the bar with a snack too.

What was good and what was bad?
Good: Paris was quite sold out and the cheapest HI in town was over 250, le Grand at 560. I got this place for 128. The RER A is steps away as is a decent sized shopping mall with food outlets. So not bad at all when you can't get into central Paris.

Bad: Soundproofing in my 1st floor room and heating could be better. And the emergency alarm went off in the middle of the day for some reason.

Value for or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Yes.

Just a mattress run for the Big Win, but yes - satisfied.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked standard room; upgraded 5 days beforehand to executive room in dedicated(and relatively newly built) Executive Wing.

How are the rooms?
In excellent condition. Executive Room has sofa and extra TV.

How is the exec. lounge?
No lounge.

What was good and what was bad?
+500 Points or drink+snack (inc. alcohol) at bar.
+Friendly, polite staff.
+Note on bed with incorrect usage of "your" made my day.
-Walsall.

What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum (Royal Ambassador)

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked cheapest 1 Double Bed 2-4-1 and initially received 2 Single Beds on the Club floor (no room upgrade but a larger room) because no Club room was available.

I asked if I could change the room to a 1 Double Bed Club room for my second night, the front desk agent magically found 1 Bed Club room. She said that the room was relisted by her colleague a few seconds ago Is this really???

How are the rooms?
Spacious but a bit dated
Sleep Advantage kit with lavender goods

How is the exec. lounge?
Pretty nice actually though it got quite busy during the evening hours. Only one bottle of Champaign per night is a bit miserable if you pay for the access.

What was your welcome gift?
None

What was good and what was bad?

Good
- Club lounge
- Breakfast at the restaurant

Bad
- Location. Too far from Heathrow when compared to the other airport hotels on Bath Road. I went to the the British Hotel Reservation Centre at 23.15 and was told Hoppa Bus finished for that day. I therefore had to take the rip-off Executive car for 29.
- The changing room of health club was a bit dirty. I do not think the staff maintain it regularly. Most of the guests (I think locals rather than hotel guests) did not wash themselves before swimming pool/jacuzzi.
- Tired bathrobe
- The internet was dead slow. Eventually I used my mobile dongle.

Value for or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Yes only if the Bath Road hotels are not available or unreasonably expensive!

Platinum (Royal Ambassador)

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Probably not

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Standard with Breakfast at Best Flexible rate and initially received Superior Smoking. Since I hate smoke smells, the room was changed to Executive Nonsmoking which was only a nonsmoking room available.

How are the rooms?
Modern and specious
Sleep Advantage kit with lavender goods
Separate walk-in shower & bathtub

How is the exec. lounge?
It is like a business & refreshment centre. The lounge is not manned, there are only PCs & printers as well as some biscuits and soft drinks. I did not see anyone using it.

What was your welcome gift?
None

What was good and what was bad?

Good
- Upgrade to the executive room

Bad
- I booked a nonsmoking room and my accounts preference said nonsmoking. Nonetheless, I was allocated to the smoking room and was told this was my request!

It actually turned out that this happened due to the IHGs IT glitch, the hotel indeed received the smoking room request.
- The restaurant manager was not impressive. She smelt cigarette smoke, which was disgusting.
- Breakfast was awful. There were many package tourists and everywhere looked messy. One toaster was placed, which was not working Its not worth paying for it at this property.

Value for or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
I do not think so

CP Hong Kong Kowloon East

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Yes, very.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked cheapest, got a top-floor deluxe suite as "one time exception" to the usual one-level upgrade. Was allowed to extend my stay in the suite by two reward nights ^

How are the rooms?
Large, nicely furnished 90 sqm suite with living room, desk area. Guest bathroom. Large bed room, walk-in closet, sizable bathroom, tub with TV. View of the bay.

How is the exec. lounge?
Access offered for 420+ HKD. Lounge is the Italian restaurant on the top floor, offering fantastic outdoor seating with view of the bay. Ample italian appetitzer and good selection of drinks including basic cocktails available for happy hour.
Outstanding staff (that makes sure your glass is never empty).

What was good and what was bad?
Good:
- Upgrade
- Fantastic staff
- Excellent club lounge
- Nice pool amidst concrete jungle
- Free breakfast for platinums
- Location is quite good for visiting HK island and the eastern NT; Wilson Trail in walking distance

Bad:
- Location is quite bad for visiting Jianshaju, i.e. "central Kowloon". Taxi necessary (or a 50 min ride on public transport)

Value for € or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Yes. This might be the best value "HK island" IHG property (considering it's just 4 MTR stops from North Point)

HI Beijing Focus Square

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?

Yes, very.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Cheapest (which wasn't cheap!), got "special" suite with club access.

How are the rooms?
Large, nicely furnished 90 sqm suite. Guest bathroom. Large bathroom, nice living room. Coffee bar with view over Beijing

How is the exec. lounge?
Great staff, good selection of drinks and food. Nice views over Beijing.

What was good and what was bad?
Good:

- Upgrade
- Fantastic staff
- Excellent club lounge
- Great location. A mall is next door, many restaurants. Airport is just 20 mins away when you find a taxi driver willing to take you there and there's no traffic jam.

Value for € or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
A really expensive HI (due to its location next to several corporate hqs), but also a very good one. Would return when in the area.

What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum Royal Ambassador

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes, as usual

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked cheapest advance rate, and received a corner executive room on high floor with club access

How are the rooms?
Medium size, bright
Clean but rather basic/cold Scandinavian design
Bathroom with separate walk-in shower and bathtub
Eco friendly amenities in the bathroom
Large flat TV with massive selection of international channels
Kettle with tea/coffee set
View over the new and rather deserted district
No Ipod/Iphone dock
Free/fast wifi
Very quiet

How is the exec. lounge?
Quite large
Very nicely decorated (one part with tables and 2 Apple computers and one printer, one separated part with elegant leather sofas, drinks, food). Pleasant terrace
Good breakfast with good selection of products
Very basic (used to be much better) evening selection of canaps (I did prefer salad).

What was good and what was bad?

Good:
- Hotel, with elegant/innovative lobby
- Very friendly staff
- Good club lounge
- Free wifi
- Free airport shuttle (five minutes drive)
- Free bicycles
- Very easy and fast access to city centre with metro or suburban train

Bad:
- Location: very close to the airport, the CP is more an airport hotel. The hotel is located in a new district (read: in the middle of nowhere). This new district has interesting contemporary buildings, but there is no urban life at all. You have more the feeling to be in a green Dubai rather than in a real city. Still, metro station is 100 metres from the hotel, with fast and easy access to city centre.

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Yes, excellent value.

Staybridge Suites - Portland Airport (PDX)

- What is your Priority Club status?
Platinum

- Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Queen Studio - upgraded to a King Suite

- How are the rooms?

Not bad at all, though rather small for a suite. Kitchenette was well-stocked with dishes, etc. for those wanting to cook during an extended stay

- What was good and what was bad?

Good:
Nice lobby
Excellent front desk staff
Complimentary bottle of water, Hershey bar, and an apple in gift bag at check-in.
Breakfast went well, with more food choices than I'd thought, and more seating than I'd realized.
Airport shuttle was prompt coming and going.

Bad:
Nothing struck me as "bad" except that their pantry wasn't as well stocked with options for the car-less as I might've liked.

- Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
I found it a bit expensive, but didn't use their free laundry feature, nor was I there on a night with a food-and-drink "social" offering.
