Baggage on an overnight layover

We are travelling EDI-LHR-BGI next month, and BA have switched the Barbados flights from T5 to T3. When we booked it was still T5. We booked Sofatel in T5 for the overnight stay. As it's not classed by BA as a "significant" change (as it's the same airport) they won't change without a fee plus an additional hotel charge. So we will be staying in T5 overnight, and transiting to T3 in the morning to get the BGI flight. We'll have at least 4 checked bags, and don't fancy transiting between terminals with them. When it was all T5 it was just about managable.

Can we check all but one of our checked bags all the way from EDI to BGI, but collect one of the bags in LHR and check it back in the next day? We need access to some medical equipment overnight - I know we can carry it thru security but sometimes we get pulled aside for an additional check and this can take ages.

I've asked BA and the agent didn't seem very sure in the answer. So I thought I'd ask of anyone here has had any experience with this before?

You have probably heard it many times, but never put anything medical that you need in checked luggage, you never know what can happen to your bag

You'll need to check everything in EDI. The medical equipment will need to stay carry on.. Is this a CPAP? Should be relatively straight forward if so.

My recommendation to you would be to collect all the bags and re-check them the following day. My personal experience of tagging bags overnight is that it significantly increases the chances of the bags not arriving at the other end and getting lost (albeit eventually found). Happened to me twice on one trip (in LHR and BKK) and since then I have never checked a bag overnight.

This. ^^

My daughter was traveling from LHR to LIS to MIA and overnighted in Lisbon, leaving her checked bag in the terminal. She arrived back at the airport in Lisbon, boarded her flight to Miami, and arrived in Miami without her checked bag. The checked bag never arrived. Yes, she collected several thousand dollars in compensation several months later, but it was a real hassle in documenting the individual items lost.
