Baggage on an overnight layover

We are travelling EDI-LHR-BGI next month, and BA have switched the Barbados flights from T5 to T3. When we booked it was still T5. We booked Sofatel in T5 for the overnight stay. As it's not classed by BA as a "significant" change (as it's the same airport) they won't change without a fee plus an additional hotel charge. So we will be staying in T5 overnight, and transiting to T3 in the morning to get the BGI flight. We'll have at least 4 checked bags, and don't fancy transiting between terminals with them. When it was all T5 it was just about managable.

Can we check all but one of our checked bags all the way from EDI to BGI, but collect one of the bags in LHR and check it back in the next day? We need access to some medical equipment overnight - I know we can carry it thru security but sometimes we get pulled aside for an additional check and this can take ages.

I've asked BA and the agent didn't seem very sure in the answer. So I thought I'd ask of anyone here has had any experience with this before?
