Which Points are best

I would be very interested to hear opinion on whether or not i should transfer my Velocity points to Kris flyer at the 1.35 velocity to 1.00 kris flyer rate. I am Australian but live in Europe. We travel back to Australia usually once per year from either Berlin or Frankfurt. We also travel to USA once or twice per yr. We have about 1 million velocity points, also have lots of Citibank points which i can transfer to Velocity but not sure just what to do with them. Thanks and Kind Regards,

Do you use the ff miles/points?
Better to use them than keep them. They decrease in value as ffp's change the rules

SQ Krisflyer ff miles have a 3 year hard expiry. Use them or lose them. SQ being in Star Alliance has a lot more ff partners
VA ff points can be kept alive in an eligible activity in 24 months
With 1,000,000 VA points I would transfer some across to SQ, but you need to use them.

This ratio will be cut. As of January 1, 2019, points will convert at a 1.55:1 ratio, rather than a 1.35:1 ratio.

Not much time left for the 1.35:1 transfer rate

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Yes we use our points. I generate a lot of points via my Citibank Ultimate card and transfer these to various programs that i am a member of depending on where it is we want to fly to. I am aware of the expiry dates for the various programs and also of the ratio change for transfers from Velocity to SQ soon to take place.
My main query was, is there a huge advantage to having 740K SQ KrisFlyer points to the 1 million Velocity which i currently hold. My gut feeling was to do the transfer mainly based on the fact that SQ have such a great name and also their Business class product is good. I have never flown internationally on Virgin so not sure if having the points for travel from Europe to Oz in business with Virgin is on par with having the lesser amount and using with SQ.

Thanks again.

VA do not fly to Eu. LAX & HKG is as far as it fly's from Oz. Anything else would be on ff partners. Compared to SQ not many VA ff partners. Have you priced out award availability & costs from Eu Oz with VA ffp?

SQ is good product and being in Star Alliance has a large number of ff partner airlines & destinations.

With a lot of points from Citibank to me transfer VA to SQ is the way to go.
As a guess award availability is more important than cost in ff miles/points.

Thinking about how to spend them there are 2 important things to look at: 1) Number of miles required 2) Availability

Using Velocity miles:
Etihad
EU - Australia = 139,000 OW (PER 121,000)
Availability is excellent in comparison to most other airlines on this route. Also bear in mind they fly to so many cities in Europe so if there is nothing from LHR for example you may find something from CDG.

Delta
EU-Australia = 127,500 OW
EU-USA = From 49,500 west coast to 71,500 east coast OW
Availability is not great but not terrible.

Hainan
EU-Australia = 139,00 OW (CNS 121,000)
Availability is good but routes are limited.

Virgin atlantic/Australia
EU - Australia = 127,500 OW
EU-USA = From 49,500 west coast to 71,500 east coast OW
Availability not great but not terrible.

Using Kirsflyer miles:

Singapore Airlines
EU - Australia = 105,000 OW (PER and DRW 95,000)
Availability not great at saver level

Star Alliance:
EU - Australia = 105,000 OW
EU-USA = 65,000 OW
Availability can be good as a lot more options

Using the ratio of 1.35:1 actually the miles required is pretty similar. I find EY's award availability to Australia to be great, lots of options and a decent product on the 787s and A380s so I would be inclined to use my velocity points on them. When there was no availability with EY, *A or SQ might have something though. Star alliance availability to USA is usually pretty good but it will cst you a lot more velocity points than sticking with VS/DL.

So I would have some in both but keep most in velocity, but as others have pointed out SQ has a 3 year expiration policy to take into account.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies, Mwenenzi & Pogonation.

Extra thanks pogonation for the effort made to post the points required example.

I have actually flown AUH to BNE with Etihad a couple of times direct on the 787 and did check via VA the availability and points cost, as you mentioned availability was quite good and cost reasonable when compared to others.

In the end i have decided to transfer all VA points to my Kris Flyer account. The reason for this is that originally i did transfer Citibank points to VA at promotional/bonus rates and this with the upcoming increase to 1.55:1 for VA to Kris Flyer transfers i seems like now is the best time for me to get a chunk of Kris flyer points at the lowest cost base.

Thanks again.

So now you have 3 years to use them, including the coveted first class suites.

As a guess you can continue to get VA points via Citibank?
