i think you would get more accurate responses if you gave more information like:
what time of the year do you plan to visit????
how long are you planning to stay????
are you looking for any particular tourist sites????
there are tons of threads in this forum on places to visit in india....a simple search will get you tons of results....

I am of Indian origin. To be honest, it really depends on your interest, budget and the amount of time you have. Its a big country with a lot of history and culture. The north is very different from the south.
Of course you have the taj mahal (if you time it right, you can also visit during a full moon now), Jaipur and Udaipur have beautiful palaces, Amritsar has the Golden temple, Goa has nice beaches, the southern states such as Tamil Nadu have a lot of historic and old temples, Kerala has backwaters, the Himalayas are in the north.
In general your dollar gets you more in india. Most items such as food and transportation are cheaper than in the states, with the exception of branded clothes and luxury accommodation which appear to cost the same. The low cost carriers like indigo airlines and spice jet allow you to comfortably travel between cities if you are on a budget.
Enjoy!

Best Places in India
This question is very old but people might be still looking for answers to this question.
Cities:
Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore
Hills:
North Himalayas, Kashmir, Leh
Historical Places as India is known for its cultural Heritage
Beaches in Mumbai, Goa
Wonders of the world in India
India still preserves the mountains, wildlife, water bodies which have their natural beauties. Search for these also.
Hope this helps.
