This ended up being way more difficult that anticipated.
In short - Yes, I did get the 1-stop flights that I wanted.

Long story - The non-stop was removed from the schedule!
Called Indigo - "sir flight is only suspended" "It may come back on schedule any day".
"If you want to change now, you have to pay applicable charges".
"Let me check with my seniors"

This nonsense kept going on for 30 minutes.

Finally I lost it and said that I will go straight to the DGCA to complain

ANd then suddenly the "seniors" accepted that I could change my flight.
The actual process of changing the flight took about 90 seconds.

What a waste of time. These people are evil !!!

That's a new one. Haven't heard that before. But good for you.

My point is spending 20 minutes on the phone with 6E, asking, demanding, yelling or whatever is time well spent in an effort to reduce an 8 hour layover.
Just to update:
So a few days back, 6E sent a link allowing us to re-schedule our return flight or accept the revised schedule as mentioned above.
Found an earlier dep. on QF from MEL - SIN thereby reducing the stop in SIN. Chose this option and it went thru without any extra amount to be paid.

2 days later, 6E reaches out again and says they haven't been able to confirm the QF leg of the itinerary. Got on a call with them and the agent seemed to feel it was unlikely the QF leg was going to get confirmed. They were offering a reasonable refund for cancelling this return leg. So cancelled, took the refund and just bought a 1 way from Scoot for the same route.

Definitely some way to go for 6E with all these new code-share operations.

Indigos PSS isn't set up to deal with these exceptions. Programming the interface with all their partners is probably not cost effective.
