Just got off 9w351 captain announced DGCA has vacated order on prohibiting cell phone usage on airplanes and they can now be used once the plane exits the runway on landing. No use allowed while take offs.
I normally start using my bb way before wheels down any way so doesn't matter much but IT is the only airline where the hotties frowned on cell ph usuage. Hopefully this will shut them up.

I would rather wait that 2-3 minutes. Don't see what peoples hurry is. Like they will miss that most important call. Yeah once the plane is on the ground then its ok to switch on the phones.
Not having a go at you in particular rsh913, just my opinion on this.

Lets just say, I respectfully disagree. On any given flight there are cell phones invariably left in in on position. So I do not see anything wrong with it.
What I find offensive is people start getting up and opening bins even before the plane has reached its parking position. This appears to be unique to India. I've not seen it outside of India but it may happen frequently there as well. Just today a pax across from in in J got up and opened the bin before the plane reached the apron.

Just out of curiosity when does the phone catch reception? I always thought that it only worked a couple of 100 meters or so in height.

I find this hilarious. Its like they are in a major hurry to get off the airplane. I once in on AI from SIN (my last AI flight) five years ago and the Pilot had to park the airplane up after landing due to people not sitting down. As soon as the flight landed one guy got up and walked towards the door and shortly after that followed half the cabin. The poor FA got sick of asking people to sit so must have reported this to the pilot.

Not really. I've typically seen coverage post wheels down. When flying on corp jets I work through pretty much the entire flight with bb on and it catches it sparsely. I am unsure of the height though.

sometimes when the cell remains switched on accidentally, i receive some sms's when its taxing , I would guess around 2000-3000 ft max not above that IME.. we get those welcome to xxx place sms's so I guess thts the limit..

This is what it basically says
"According to industry experts, it is possible to use cell phones with varying success during the ascent and descent of commercial airline flights, although the difficulty of maintaining a signal appears to increase as planes gain altitude. Some older phones, which have stronger transmitters and operate on analog networks, can be used at a maximum altitude of 10 miles, while phones on newer digital systems can work at altitudes of 5 to 6 miles. A typical airline cruising altitude would be 35,000 feet, or about 6.6 miles."
