CNBC just flashed an alert saying Hyatt acknowledged a data breach.

"Malware on payment system"

HYATT NOTIFIES CUSTOMERS OF MALWARE ACTIVITY

Customers encouraged to review payment card account statements closely

December 23, 2015 (CHICAGO) – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announced that it recently identified malware on computers that operate the payment processing systems for Hyatt-managed locations. As soon as Hyatt discovered the activity, the company launched an investigation and engaged leading third-party cyber security experts.

The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be posted to www.hyatt.com/protectingourcustomers. Hyatt has taken steps to strengthen the security of its systems, and customers can feel confident using payment cards at Hyatt hotels worldwide.

As always, customers should review their payment card account statements closely and report any unauthorized charges to their card issuer immediately. Payment card rules generally provide that cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized charges that are timely reported.

Customers with questions may visit www.hyatt.com/protectingourcustomers or call 1-877-218-3036 (U.S. and Canada) or +1-814-201-3665 (International) from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST.

The news from Hyatt was very non-specific and I just finished going over our story in Frequent Business Traveler with our news editor (we are staffed very thin this week due to the holiday).

Hyatt neither said when it occurred nor when it was uncovered. Also, issuing a news release at the close of the business day seems to have been intended to lighten the blow in terms of potential coverage. :(

Because preventing intruders is so simple, and no decent IT shop ever has these problems?

Looks like the breach is limited to Hyatt managed properties, franchised ones are not affected.

Aren't they all Hyatt managed? Just owned by different companies then under management contract with Hyatt?

I hope Hyatt does the responsible thing and gives everyone possibly affected free credit monitoring for a period of time.

Free credit monitoring from Target, from Home depot, from Tmobile, etc

Anyone was and still is able to sign up for these.

These won't help many!

Also not happy to see this in the press before I hear directly from Hyatt. NY Post (not the best source of business info) said the Company found it in late November but felt it was the appropriate time to make the discovery public.

Maybe they did decide that people are away and this was a good time to announce.
