I wonder if this explains what happened to me the other week. I checked in to a Hyatt and the person checking me in was whispering "VIP" this and that to her colleague and then proceeded to show me to the room. She then showed me how the light switch and the a/c worked! I was a bit nonplussed about this as it's certainly never happened before. Presumably I'm a lowly V diamond though.

I saw a "status code" on a housekeeping sheet for both days of our stay at Hyatt Regency Hakone. The code for our room was "V1" on the first day, and "S" on the second. Every other room was an "O".

V1 is generally reserved for heads of state, high ranking royalty etc.
