There have been varyng degrees of success with this award use issue. I did not pay it.

In retrospect it was my first visit to India and I had no idea what to expect nor can I comment on how this hotel compares to others in the area.

A great offbeat choice is the Manor, a very small boutique hotel in Friends Colony that is simply great (and is used by Aman as a liaison to the Aman-i-khas).
I've stayed at both the Manor and the Hyatt, and I'd take the Hyatt in a flash. See the luxury forum for a well-deserved and thorough trashing of the Manor. I agree with you the Imperial is the best in Delhi.

I'll be there on August 24, checking out the morning of August 25. Too bad, it would have been fun to catch up with an FT'er in India.

Hi,

A trip report.

Dates of stay: 25th August to 27th August
Room 133

I had booked a RC levle room and arrived by car from Agra around 330pm.

The car is searched before going up the hotel drive ( mirror underneath then engine trunk and boot are opened).

You have to go through a metal detector as you enter the lobby and your handbaggage is searched.

Check in was quick and was told I had been upgraded to a Junior suite. I was escorted by the check in agent to the room. To get in you had to press the switch above the door handle and then push your room key againat it unti lthe red light turned green.

The Jr Suite was excellent with a livnig room ( tv and dvd player and a sofa with a table and fruit ( red/greeen apples) and a candle with a bowl of water and aromatic oil to pour into the water.
The lving room and bedroom are seaprated by a sliding retractrable door.
The bathoom was very nice with a glass basin on top of the marble counter.
The bath and shower were in a separate glass room with a rainhead shower ( very nice).
They also had a dental kit, a shaving kit and a loofah.
The room had slippers/bathrobe and a safe as well as several bottles of water ( replenished at turndown service).
The pool area is very nice with a swimming lane in the middle.
The fitness center is very good.
The cafe did a very good buffet dinner (1000 rps) with nice iced tea. The rock waterfall features were very good and the lobby is beautiful).

The RC club on the 6th floor did very nice evennig snacks ( the blueberry mango cheesecakes slices were very good) and the breakfast was good ( no orange juice but the sweetline juice was nice) . There were free pc's too.

One wing of the hotel is being renovated currently. The corridors are very nice with stone features on the lower half of the wall. and black & white pictures of indian sights along the wall. ONe evening I was walking down the corridor ( past the crew lounge ) to my room when there was a power cut. It and all I could see was the green exit light. The power came back on in a few seconds).

Overall a good stay.

Regards

Any recent visits?

Has anyone stayed here recently? We're planning an award stay at the end of the month. Is the tax still an issue with award stays? Should we email with the manager before our stay in order to attempt to get confirmation that we won't have to pay it?

Also, does the hotel organize reliable airport pickup? Is this included in the stay or is there an extra cost?

Have not stayed there on an award, and it may be worthwhile e-mailing to find out situation re taxes.

Airport pickup will definitely cost. Not outrageous by Western standards (about USD50), but outrageous by Indian standards.
As a Diamond I get the club access, but it turned out that paying the higher rate (which included airport pickup) was cheaper.

Prices have soared in the last year , USD250- 300 is the norm, not including taxes.
Nice hotel, but expensive.

The airport pickup is very reliable. Whether it is included or not depends on the details of the rate.

i've booked an award stay for mid-november. I'd like to email the gm to find out the latest on the tax issue---who's the contact? The most recent listed is from early '06, and is likely out of date. I couldn't get any further info from the diamond line....

well, i have the answer to my own question ---direct from the finance department:
"Greetings From New Delhi,

Reference your Query with regards to Tax charge on the FFN Room Comp, please note Tax would not be charged ."

(i will, of course, carry a copy of the email with me)

How are the recent renovations? I know it was mentioned earlier that they were remodeling?

Unrelated to the renovation question, so dont use this as a reference -

There is an Albert Brooks movie - Something about comedy in the the Muslim world - ( sorry cant recall the exact name ) that was filmed in the lobby and rooms of the hotel. Took me a minute to figure it out.

" Hey - thats the Hyatt Delhi !!! "

Room renovations have been ongoing in a phased manner: at least 3 wings are done now. The newer rooms feature a much-needed revamp, with yacht-like wood paneling, flat-screen wall-mounted TV and a more contemporary, chic feel. The bathrooms have a better feel to them as well, with the rain shower being a welcome addition, though the blue-colour night light is an acquired taste.

The cafe renovations have been ongoing and it is slated for opening on 1-Dec-08, hopefully ending the noise in the lobby / pool area.

Diamond "amenities" haven't improved much though: a bowl of Fox fruit mints is what I see on the table currently!

The cafe renovation is finally complete. They also spruced up the elevators a bit.

The new cafe looks much sharper and brighter than before. Not that it looked dark previously. To the right of the entrance from the elevators they have a fresh fruit and juice station. They even have this machine there to make fresh sugar cane juice though it apparently is only operational from lunchtime and I was there during breakfast. They have several islands down the middle not unlike they had in the past. One with breads, one with cold cuts and salad, one with yoghurts, etc. The breakfast offerings are similar to before all in all. Those who have been here will recall that the cafe has a main section and then a step down to a narrow section along the windows. So along the wall separating these two sections they now have a long cushioned bench so that when sitting on the bench your back is towards the pool and your companions are sitting across from you on chairs. Anyway, a nice upgrade and the Indian restaurant has reverted to its former service. Most importantly, no more noise and dust from cutting marble.

One of the things that I've noticed in the renovations of the guest room bathrooms is that there is no good way to seal the shower section from the rest of the bathroom. This leads to the entire bathroom floor filling with water. An annoyance. Also, the half bathtub seems quite odd. Any idea why they would go with this instead of just ditching the bathtubs altogether?

I am at the HR Delhi right now. My 4th stay here over the past 3 yrs. Everything pretty much the same-

- reliable and on-time pickup at airport
- upgrade to Club level, however, no Diamond amenity offered
- have not checked out the "new" Cafe yet, but the Club receptionist was definitely talkibg it up
- decent breakfast and the usual very nice evening spread...

I will definitely continue to stay here based on the current service level.

I'm going to be spending the night at the Hyatt in Delhi on my way to Katmandu in November. I was very worried about transportation to and from the airport in Delhi, but I was pleased to learn the Hyatt will take care of it. I used points to reserve a club room and the transfers to and from the airport are included (only if you use the points for a club level room, though.)

I stayed in the Hyatt in Delhi overnight a couple of years ago and, that time, I was using a travel agent who arranged for a private car. I didn't even know that I was entitled to free transfers. My plane got into Delhi several hours late and I had an early flight in the morning, so I didn't actually sleep at the hotel. But there was a concierge on the club floor who was delightful and she and I drank tea into the wee hours.
