Getting to Lantau

What is the quickest/easiest way to get to Lantau from an area near the Conrad?

For travel to the Chek Lap Kok (HKG) airport or for some other reason?

For the airport, take a cab to Hong Kong Station and then take the Airport Express train.

Taxi from Conrad to Hong Kong Station and then Airport Express to Airport, which is on Lantau. Bus to Tung Chung MTR. Bus to Po Lin monastery.

Or taxi from airport for maybe HK$150. Other variants are possible. I'd verify when you're local to avoid an unpleasant surprise since things have a way of changing.

Thanks for all your help. Here's what I ended up doing:

Taxi from Conrad to HKG Central Station - $15 HKG
RT Sameday Ticket to Airport - $100 HKG
Taxi (Must call BLUE line, phone number is on the phone near the taxi stand) to Po Lin Monestary - $151 HKG (One way)
Taxi back from Po Lin Moestary $152 (HKG (One way)

Train back, covered in RT Ticket
Taxi from HKG Central to Conrad - $15

Total: $433 HKG or about $50-60 US. FWIW United Airlines does have a deal for 7 hours worth of tour for $101. If you wanted to make this cheaper, here's how to do it:

1) Take the train line (not express) going one stop short of the airport to (Tung Chung), you still go to Central station, just choose the train. Not sure how much this would have saved, but I bet a little bit.

2) Don't take a taxi back (take the taxi there), then on the way back, take the bus down into town (it will be the bus with the big line) and then ask for the bus to the airport or Tung Chung. The bus was a few dollars HKG

3) Take the bus both ways, fairly gutsy if you aren't sure which bus to take.

Note: Whatever you do, DO NOT take a taxi to/from the airport to HKG, it's exhorbantly expense. And if the Taxi driver tries to convince you it's the same at $250 HKG, it's not. If you return the same day, the ticket to/from HKG and the airport is only $100 per person on the express train.

Lastly, getting from the train to the taxi in the airport is kinda trickey. To pull it off, when the train arrives, you need to go towards the main building, then once there, go LEFT, then down one level, then wrap around left again, then towards TAXI, but be sure that you don't follow the sign to the buses or to the Car Park (this will lead you to other peoples cars, not Taxi's).

Overall, it was quite worth going, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Give the vegaterian DELUXE meal a try when your there.

Just in case anyone else is thinking of this... what you should have done is to take the Tung Chung line (also from HK station in Central). This takes you to Tung Chung which is just on the north side of Lantau Island inland from the airport. This costs less than HKD 12 each way on an Octopus card (maybe HKD14 otherwise). Then you can take a bus direct from Tung Chung to the Monastary for about HKD10 each way. It might not be quite as quick or comfortable as a taxi, but you get more of a feel for the local style.

But by far the best way (not the quickest) in my view is still to catch the ferry from Central to Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay) on Lantau and then take the bus from there. The ferry costs about HKD25 depending on whether its a fast one (30 mins) or slower one (about 45 mins) and whether its a weekeday or weekend. The bus meets the ferry and then takes about a further 30 mins to the monastary. If you're lucky yo can get one of the slow ferries that has an open deck upstairs at the back and sit out in the sun all the way over.
