Good advice for St. Lucia. Just did this in February.
However you will need to use a GLONP for St. Lucia, and that is 150k pts.

Activities AND variety of reasonable dining is at the forefront for me, so I would choose Caribe Hilton in San Jaun Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is the most underappreciated island in the Caribbean IMO.

Climb/hike through El Yunque rain forest, lots of lone beaches around the island, a culture that is fairly easy to participate with/in, Scuba/snorkel, camping, coffee plantations, desert areas on the SW side of island, great cheap food everywhere(away from major hotels), friendly people, any watersport, great surfing, golf, casinos, Rio Camuy caves (outstanding), Aricebo observatory, lots of festivals, old San Juan (& El Morro), oldest church in the western hemisphere, great nightlife, & .....?

(.... means I'm sure there is more but I've left it out due to not remembering.)

Edited to add: US Territory so no customs, US dollars is currency.

We're looking to go to the Bahamas. The hilton has a private beach and is 5 min walk from town. Lots of snorkeling and boat trips. It might be worth looking at.

Excellent property, but keep in mind that there is no rush for redemptions there - it's a Premium category now, thus 150K for GLONP, will become a category 5 after June 1, thus requiring GLON2, still 150K.

Yes I'll be the jerk, technically the Bahamas are not part of the caribbean, but I too still lump them into the Caribbean.

No 5 minute walk from town, you are in the "downtown area" if you stay at the property.

The private beach is small and next to the area where the cruise ships dock.

Don't get me wrong, we love the property and have been three times, but the Caribe is a far better property in a far better island IMO.

moremilesplease, check out some dining experiences we had in the Bahamas in the Flyertalk Dining Forum. The fish fry, an outpost of fish shacks (some nice, some not so nice) to the east of Nassau 3 minutes by car and is within walking distance of the Hilton is a great place for a cheap meal of fresh fish/seafood (and it is not all fried!). 90% locals everytime we have been.

You're incorrect. Only category 6 would require GLONP2 (175K), category 5 properties, including the Caribe Hilton, would require GLON2 (150K).

Don't forget to Order your GLON Certs

Remember all. If you can, order your GLON certs now before the end of May 2003. The points go up to 175,000 from 100,000.

Already have the reservation for two rooms at the hawaiian village for this Aug. No problems requesting them and they were very nice on the Diamond desk.

Remember, they are good for one year from issue. If you don't use them, have them placed back into your account. The only thing is, they will not be worth the same points.

If you are going to Hawaii, you'll need ALON certs, not GLON. Also, ALONs are going from 100K to 175K, and GLONs are going from 100K to 150K.

If one has no firm travel plans, it might make sense to wait until as close to the 31 May 03 deadline as possible, to maximize the "option utility" of the certificates.

On the other hand, waiting too long will increase the chance of encountering congestion that may prove fatal to hopes of needing only 100,000 instead of 150,000 (or 175,000) points.

Does anyone know if the 6-day worldwide GLON stay (or Hawaiian ALON stay) must be started during the year-long validity of the certificate, or fully completed during this time?

With the help of years of quarterly profile updates (before I even joined FlyerTalk), compounded by the 50,000 CNTU thread posted on this board, an HH Amex card, and topped off with a MyPoints transfer and that 2,500 point survey, I am now eligible to obtain my first GLON.

Or should I get an ALON for a Hawaiian stop-over on my way to the Mainland? Decisions, decisions. Not to mention the question of where I will find that much time off (!) and the issue of whether to pull the kids from school. Nice problems to have, though.

Please explain "they will not be worth the same points."

If you redeem a GLON for 100,000 points by May 31, shouldn't you get 100,000 points if you later (within one year of issue) place it back in your account???
