They are targeted at very different market segments. The Ascend is meant to be their everyday spending, average joe kind of card.
The Aspire, on the other hand, is a purely traveler kind of card. Everything about it is travel related. Free night, free status, airline credit and resort credit, all travel related freebies. Therefore, the spending categories align perfectly with the rest of the card.

Something I am surprised they didn't do was give an additional benefit to people that have diamond from stays/nights/points like giving them a few suite upgrade certificates or giving them highest priority for upgrades or somehting like a credit for a couple free drinks on every stay.

Somewhat related - do you know if AA gift cards can be used onboard for duty free purchases? Don't really have a need for gift cards to purchase tickets ATM but thinking maybe could use this credit for gift cards for duty free.

How is this going to work with the annual fee and the ascend and the free night.
I have the $10K spend in on Citi for the free night and realize it won't post until my anniversary date. I have no intentions on keeping this card (unless for some reason Am Ex won't approve me for the Aspire and then I'll just upgrade this card after the free night posts).
I'm assuming the annual fee will have to be paid but will I be able to get a full refund on the annual fee once the free night posts if I cancel right after? The free night is still worth paying the annual fee for but I hate paying annual fee for a card I won't use plus I already paid the annual fee for half of 2018 planning on reaching diamond status with 40K spend which isn't going to happen.

Just got the Aspire card earlier this week. For the Plat card I recently switched my travel reimbursement from UA to Delta. I haven't made any choice yet for the Aspire card. Is it correct to assume that I don't have to make my initial Aspire choice in January (aka "today") and can make it any time over the course of the year (and then change it next January)?

I waited a couple days between each transaction to avoid having multiple transactions lumped together.
https://www.delta.com/egift/eGiftPurchase.action
So far, 3 of the 5 credits have posted, corresponding to the 3 oldest transactions.
My understanding is $50 is the highest limit. Anything higher may not get reimbursed.
American Airlines should also work for amounts that are up to $100, but I don't have personal experience with AA.
Between the two airlines, Delta made more sense for my personal habits and itineraries. Good Luck.

$50 is the limit per giftcard, but you can buy multiple in one shot. They will post individually as $50 charges and get credited. At least that is how it works for the Plat card, I just completed my purchases.

Just wanted to post a data point and share my experience. I selected Delta and have, over the course of 7 days, purchased 5 $50 Delta egift cards.

Just received my Aspire card. Surprised that it's not a metal one.
