Resort Fee for Award Stays?

Why would people have mixed results? It seems like most people do not get charged (without having to ask), while other people say they do get charged. And Hilton of course has no official policy on it.
Even at the same resort, there are conflicting reports.

The poster who claimed they were charged one when they made the reservation was likely confused by the way their confirmation read.

Are you charged room tax on an award stay? NO because free is free and how will they figure the tax amount. If staying on an award stay, a resort fee should not be charged. If one is included, there should be no surprises. The guest must be informed prior to the stay so they can opt out of the reservation. Since the resort fee is part of the hotel fee, it should be waived on an award. Free is free!
If a resort wanted to charge a resort fee on a comped night, it would easily be able to do so. Many Las Vegas hotels do this, especially for lower tiered guests. They provide them with free room nights, but still charge the resort fee.

The resort fee must be disclosed at time of booking. I believe the FTC has made that clear although I don't have a citation at the moment. If a resort fee is not mentioned anywhere in the booking process it should not be charged and I would challenge it if it were. I would also keep copies of all relevant pages from the booking process in addition to the final reservation.
I have never been charged a resort fee on a Hilton award stay.

That's good to know. I am looking at specifically redeeming at the DoubleTree Golf Resort Palm Springs. I don't reckon there is a specific thread for this property or all properties individually? Haha
I'm wondering if calling them in advance would net anything, but I guess it's all about arguing that charge if it shows up on checkout...

Edited to add: I just looked at that hotel and tried a dummy booking. They do describe the resort fee in general on the initial page. However when you click on the Standard Room Reward link on the initial booking page they don't show a resort fee. When you click on one of the paid rate links on the other hand (e.g. AAA Rate) they do show the resort fee. This would indicate to me that an award stay does not incur a resort fee. If I wanted to verify it for peace of mind I'd make the award booking and then call the hotel to verify.

I checked the list for you. The DoubleTree Golf Resort Palm Springs (which is actually in Cathedral City, CA) does not have a dedicated thread on FT.

Hi all,
Jumping in here...
Hilton HHonors members should not be charged a resort fee when booking a reward stay. If there are any questions about a specific property/stay, feel free to PM me the details.
Thank you!
Lauren

This would be a great perk to clearly outline online and other documents about HH.

I think you will be charged. If you try to use the slider, it shows resort fee from 5000 points used to anywhere except the far right using all points. The resort fee disappears when you use ALL points.

Hotel Reward Stays ("Reward Stays") are stays at hotels within the Hilton Portfolio with the use of full Points or Points combined with payment, where available, or a Reward Certificate. If any portion of Points is used for the Member's stay, the entire stay is considered a Reward Stay.

Recent stay at Diplomat - during award booking online it showed resort fee mandatory but wasn't applied at checkout/folio and verified in conversation with reservation specialist at the property.

The Hilton Honors terms and conditions says, in part,
This seems to contradict the experience reported by Need:
Lauren, thank you for any clarification you can provide (after you return from the Independence Day long weekend).
