I just now booked a 5k night hotel in Bali. There aren’t too many, but they certainly exist. I hate stealth devaluations as much as the next guy. Still, lets try and be accurate.

You are correct, yet those 5K and 10K disappearing as we speak (we all were taken by "surprise'). Maybe other, higher properties, went up, too.

Of course, nobody likes points inflation, and it is annoying to see 5,000 point properties increase in cost to 10,000 or 15,000 points. I agree with you that it is sneaky of Hilton to stealthily eliminate 5,000 point properties without a word to members.

Yup, my loss is valued at least $1.2K just because of this sneaky way Hilton did the devaluation.

Same applies to Turkey and Egypt, yet those countries have 5K properties as of now. Even more so, devaluing properties in Russia doesn`t make any sense whatsoever. I doubt they will go back to 5K after FIFA 2018.

I hear you. Despite of the regime, many people are curious about it - in my wildest dreams, I want to visit North Korea :D And in no dreams I want to visit that city in the middle of nowhere in the UK :D

cant speak for others but my post was to provide proper prospective on devaluation rate and overall approach to managing loyalty program at hilton vs spg and hyatt..

i do not know what marriott will do with spg but i have reasonable trust in hyatt approach and at the same time i am quite certain hilton will continue to devalue

That middle of nowhere City in the U.K. is in the top ten biggest cities in the country and boasts a university that is in the top 100 in the world.

And the hotel in question is a great place to use as a way into / out of the Peak District and its charming villages :).

And besides Brits who know about this city in the middle of nowhere (well, somewhere lost around Manchester and York), majority of the world does not care about it or have any desire to go there. :D Even for the 10K Hilton points :D

I agree. Hilton's devaluations are nothing new and I do not see why there is such a concern now.

I agree there is nothing new, but the ways the programme is devalued can be subtle and easily missed. So although there is constant concern I'm pleased that OP has called out this specific example ^.

Europe 2018 Hilton Honors 28 hotels at 5,000 points - Loyalty Traveler

The increase in category 1 hotels at 5,000 points from 24 hotels to 28 hotels in Europe in 2018 is almost entirely due to 11 additional hotels in Turkey.
The blog post seems like a good place to start from to get an idea of what has changed. There are a number of links in there to low priced Hiltons.

Since Hilton Honors is changing reward prices without notice in 2018 for many low level hotels, these reward rates are subject to change at any time.

...and more:
Hampton by Hilton Bristol Airport, UK -devalued from 10K to 15K in 2018
Hampton by Hilton Swinoujscie, Poland - devalued from 10K to 15K in 2018
Hampton by Hilton Lublin, Poland - fluctuates to 13K- 15K-17K-19K for Standard Reward in 2018

I am not that concerned about the 5K or 10K properties. However, for the last three years or so I have tried to book a week on the beach at one of a handful of properties. I will check points needed and I am always 50K short. I will go earn some more and come back and I am still 50K short. I can not earn them fast enough to catch up with the inflation, particularly for something other than city or courtyard (parking lot) view at a beachfront property.

What is the inflation percentage annually do you think you are facing?

And we haven`t checked all 10K properties and haven`t started to check 15K and up ones. I guess Hilton though they could hide this silent devaluation and nobody would have noticed.

Hampton Inn Ottumwa (Iowa) went from 10K to 15K two weeks ago.

Very unscientific numbers based on too darn few properties for a good sample: I used to book a week of stay at the beach for 300K. When I got to 350K I tried another stay in a property I had used before and it was a bit over my 350K. I earned more and tried again and it was 400K. Don't misunderstand, The base rate did not change. The rate for a room that actually had a view of the beach keeps creeping out of range. I just rechecked and found that the room that was 30K per night just 4 years ago is now 100K per night for a similar week. I can get the parking lot view for 50K with no guarantee of upgrade.

If I can ever sneak up on a week, I will burn the points and be done.
