I find the new BWI rental car center rather odd... lots of stress in the garage and it quite often happens that they almost physically shove you into a car just having returned

Booked: D (sample: Skoda Octavia)
Receivedr: Seat Ibiza ST TSi Connect - tagged Z
I suspect that Hertz will deem this an upgrade, and D to Z sort of is......... but the Ibiza really should be in a Group less than a Z, as it is a physically much smaller car than the likes of the Focus and Cee'd Estate models which you usually find in this class. The one I received had a list price of £15.4k, which also means that to buy it is 25% cheaper than the Octavia TDi SE of Group D. At least it was new (16 plate)

Assigned: F6 2106 Toyota Camry SE with 3 (!) miles on the odometer.
It was a decent car, but I had some time and wanted to see if I could find anything better. Gold Choice only had other C class cars and a fire engine red YB Sonic LTZ that was somewhat tempting. I went into the Gold Booth but they were only able to offer a F Chrysler 200.
Carfirmation offered me Impalas of varying colors but I was afraid of pulling the trigger in fear of getting an Impala Classic. The Gold Booth was unwilling to assign me an Impala without an upcharge so I decided to gamble and picked a white Impala from carfirmation. It turned out to be a G 2016 Impala 1LT with 4,000 miles on the odometer and non-activated Sirius/XM (which I corrected by calling Roadside Assistance).

Reserved full size, offered Impala.
This time I asked for something nicer in a SUV and was then offered a Lincoln, Infinity or a Dodge. I chose the Navigator for the space. It is a beautiful SUV, brand new and loaded with gadgets.

Received: Originally assigned an Avensis 1.8 petrol. Not a great upgrade, but not really falling short (group I). Asked to change it and was rudely dismissed as "You got an upgrade." I really dislike the Avensis (it's straight out of the 90s) and eventually settled on a Focus, as the agent wouldn't even check availability of other Group I or X cars.

Norway and Australia
Sydney Downtown January 2016:
Gold
Booked: Hertz Mystery Vehicle - Auto
Got: Toyota Corolla (smaller one, basically one group above Mystery Vehicle)
But after a few words and a legere/semi-profi attitude I got an offer (and of course took it) for Audi Q5 NAV for AUD 25/day, which was already worth it just because of NAV, not including the car itself
Norway just now:
Gold
Booked: G5 Tesla
Got: "G55" Tesla 4x4 70D.
Funny part 1 - I got a car that is rarely available for rental. So I take this as an upgrade (otherwise I would end up with "JDAR Mercedes B" = Volvo V40).
Funny part 2 - You dont pay for gas nor toll nor parking with E-car in Norway. So renting Tesla for 3 days at Hertz with any 15% discount (eg free Flying Blue membership) makes the trip cheaper than renting a VW Polo (and any other car)

2 problems with National: I am not impressed with their quoted rates, especially for one-way rentals, and they are not participating worldwide. Hertz offers quite a few countries where rewards and status can be both earned and used.

My best Hertz upgrade was in Moscow, Russia in January (downtown location). I have a US-based President's Circle, but as an independent licensee they don't have to honor it.
