Posted this in the SLC thread, but realized that other locations may be applicable to the topic so thought I would ask the question more generally.
Anyone had experience recently renting a ski equipped vehicle? Wondering if I rent an intermediate if I will get upgraded or do they just slap a rack on whatever car you reserve?

Probably not a problem in SLC, but I've reserved ski equipped vehicles at hertz airport locations at other ski destinations and have been denied a vehicle because they didn't stock ski equipped vehicles at that station. Of course, I would also be reprimanded because I booked and confirmed a "ski equipped" vehicle add-on through the hertz.com website and then had the audacity to assume that they would actually have any.
My guess that they'll force an upsell to the SUV rate if that's all they've got with ski racks, but it depends on the compassion of the customer service rep and you may get lucky.

If you are traveling by yourself or even with just one have you considered getting just a full size with a fold-down rear seat? You can easily put the skis in without limiting the front seat comfort. Even a suv you could do that to avoid their $18 day ski rack fee. BTW, they should have ski racks on hand to install I've watched them do it and it takes less than 5 mins-don't fall for the upsell.
