Beer selection in Hawaii?
Does anyone know what the beer selection is like in Hawaii? Are there west coast microbrews or better yet Belgian Ales available? Any local beers worth trying? Our last four vacations have been beer related (Amsterdam, Belgium, Rome and Amsterdam) but I didn't feel like freezing my ... off again this December. (Can we say ...?)

I'd suggest you stop into Brew Moon at Ward... There are a ton of breweries on this island... This website will give you more info:

The Kona Brewing Co. makes some good beers. I love the Lilikoi Wheat Ale and the Castaway IPA.
If you go there, you can get a tasting selection of all.

Kona Brewing Co's beer is available in bottles. A few of the selections you can get in California and Japan, but I think you can get most or all of them at the markets in Hawaii.

Kein Bier auf Hawaii
This is SO DAMN FUNNY!
We have a rather common (drinking) song in Germany that goes something like this:
Es gibt kein Bier auf Hawaii, es gibt kein Bier;
drum fahr' ich nicht nach Hawaii, drum bleib' ich hier.
Es ist so hei auf Hawaii, kein khler Fleck,
und nur vom Hula Hula geht der Durst nicht weg.
my rough translation:
There's no beer in Hawaii, you'll find no beer,
so I won't go to Hawaii, I'll rather stay here.
It is so hot in Hawaii, no cool place to stay,
and just doing the hula won't make the thurst go away.
Tried to make it rhyme too!

Surprisingly, one of the better beers sold at a good price/value relationship is Steinlager New Zealand brew... The Kiwi's make a decent mass produced beer in Steinlager brand, and I'll admit that I've downed a few when in NZ. Since New Zealand is relatively close to Hawaii, it's a good export market for them and Steinlager drinkers in the Islands enjoy a lot of promotions that bring the price down. I bought a few 12 packs at the Safeway in Kauai last week for a party at a cost of $16.99 per 12 pack of bottles. Steinlager was less costly than many of the Mainland beers that were available!

Thanks for the info. I could definitely drink a Steinlager or two, although my preference would be a Chimay Blue. The barleywine from Kona Brewing sounded right down my alley as well. Hopefully it will be in season in December; barleywine is a winter style ale. Yeti88 you will understand my love for beer by the names of my German Shepherds: Marzen, Jever, Maximator, Hannen, and Pauli-Girl.

From today's cover of West Hawaii Today's online edition
The online edition of West Hawaii Today features this article on the front page:
The Barley Boys
Beer was the guest of honor.
India pale ale, Russian imperial stout, robust porter and golden pilsner filled glass mugs at Gale Willich's house Saturday afternoon in Honaunau.
But these beers weren't imported from around the world -- they were made here in West Hawaii by a group of homebrewers that call themselves the Kona Coast Barley Boys. Members meet monthly to talk story and talk beer.
Willich has served as president of the Barley Boys since founding the group in 1996.
The picture's caption reads:

Took me a while to figure out though!
BTW: Is bugmenot.com down?! Have tried multiple times but can't seem to get it to work. If it does work (again), you might consider posting your secret login/password combination there too.

Primo's Coming Back!
Hawai'i's most beloved beer is making a return in yet another reincarnation hoping to capitalize on the tradition of a brand gone, but not forgotten. Article in today's Honolulu Advertiser: http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com:80...11180339/1071/

Always fun to get this kind of news here. This is an old Schlitz beer!
I liked the statement '...should go well with the local kine grindz...you gotta go well with the Poke' ^ ^
Ta, kaukau!
(PS. Just finished a Tim Tam... something to look forward to for your next trip!)
