If you want nice ocean views and short walks to rooms, consider the two options at the Mauna Kea resort- the Mauna Kea Beach hotel or Hapuna Beach hotel. Both have rooms with great ocean views if that is what you are after. Also, the walk to the beaches are only a couple of minutes from most of the rooms at either hotel; and, they are great beaches. You can also rent many nice homes at the resort for about the same price as a room at either hotel. I don't know if the two night stay comes into play with the home rentals, but you are going to be there during the low season, so a two night deal might be had. Something to consider......

The Pepeekeo scenic drive 15 minutes north of Hilo is very nice with beautiful views of Onomea Bay.

Thanks everyone for all the help and info. We have decided to fly into and stay on the Hilo side and then head to the volcano from there, along with possibly a few other stops if time/energy allows.
We just decided to stay at the Doubletree in oceanfront rooms, since we are only there 2 nights.
We are checking out the self guided tours and trying to find something that fits our needs.
Your ideas and input was so helpful!

If you are in Hilo on a Wednesday or Saturday, the farmers market in Hilo Town is worth a visit. Hilo Farmers Market Home Page

If anyone in your group is a coffee nerd, I can recommend these folks, who have just opened a cafe in Hilo: https://bigislandcoffeeroasters.com/pages/hilo-cafe
And also a cafe in Mountain View (on the way to the volcano from Hilo) called Koana: https://www.alohakoana.com
