Smile 10 things to do on Oahu for $10 or less

CNN: 10 things to do on Oahu for $10 or less

I have not been to Hawaii, so I cannot comment... However, I've often found using local transportation and finding local eateries to be smart!

TheBus, eating locally, etc...

Love a bargin and in 15 years of visiting Hawaii the cost of everything has dramatically increased. What hasn't? But HI bargins can still be found. CNN's list is a bit deceptive in one way. . . if you factor in rental car/gas as transportation to these attractions -- that shoots the under $10, but I suppose one could get to most of these on THE BUS, if you had the stamina.

We were just reminiscing about our first trip to Hawaii in 97' Oahu and Maui -- We got RT airfare "sale" from STL for under $500. Rented a very nice condo on both islands - Waikiki and Makena - recall they were both around $150 a night or less. We used coupons for attractions and food. Plus, we went with friends and split the cost. Even adding in rental car, interisland air, food, misc. . . the whole trip was very reasonable then. Ah well, spend a tad more now but it's still paradise!

Speaking of "reasonable" and spending "a tad more now," look at these oldies but goodies and smile:

In going to the Arizona Memorial, you will wait a LONG time to catch the 40 or 62 in Waikiki. They start at the Ala Moana Center.

Love it! RHH $62 a night!! OMG. We stayed at the RHH a year ago and the AAA rate for ocean front room in the original building was $325 plus tax and daily resort fee. . . and those of that love the RHH know the historic standard rooms even with an ocean view are "old school" small with tiny bathrooms even after the renovation. It is a beauty though. Won't even type what we are paying for a "standard", probably looking at the parking lot view at the Aulani in July. . . let's just say we could have stayed a whole week at the RHH in 1981 for just one night in 2012 at the Disney Aulani. Scary. But, it is still paradise!

We went to hawaii on a whim- Oahu- for the first time in Jan 2008 because the flights (from LAX) was ~$280 all in. It was, of course, awesome. So awesome we took advantage of the ~$300 tickets to ogg that May.

I suggest a trip to the Ala Moana Shopping center to pick up a plate lunch then across the street to eat it at the beach park.

If you can catch a band concert by the Royal Hawaiian Band (http://www.rhb-music.com) it is a memory. Founded in 1836 it is the only US band with a royal legacy. Catching them at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand is an even greater memory.

62 starts in Downtown Alapai Transit Center. If you are in Ala Moana Center, you can take 20, 40, or 42, or route A on Kapiolani and Keeaumoku.

Trivia: The 62 only starts at Ala Moana at 5:36 am & 7:17 am. Another way to the Arizona is to catch the 2 or 13 on Kuhio and transfer to the A express at Punchbowl. The A (I think) does not pull into the Memorial lot. No return bus pulls into the lot. You have to walk out to the main drag. A real bummer is both the B and E express have ceased Waikiki service.

There's an app for the TheBus now called "DaBus" I think. It shows real time arrival information and nearby bus stops. although the estimates can be off during the afternoon rush hour.

I am also a big fan of the Dole Whip and found out that you can get it in the Ala Moana food court. Its served from a little kiosk towards the slipper house store. It sure beats driving to Waipahu when I get the craving for some of that goodness.

What I goof on the most is airfare. In laws went in 1984 and paid $880/person RT and then we went in 1994 and paid $850/person RT. Then in 1997 @ $500/person, $1998 @ $1,200/person, 2001 @$750/person, 2004 @ $510/person, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 @ plus/minus $800/person. Hotels and car rentals have gone up, not down since 1994.
