I always rent a convertible or jeep in Hawaii.
Put the top down, and drive around the island. Have macadamia nut pancakes at Keoni's in Waikiki. Stop in Haleiwa to walk around the town and have Kua'Aina Mahi Mahi burgers, then have shave ice at Matsumoto's. Dive north and stop at Waimea Bay for the great beach. Keep driving north and stop at Shark's Cove and snorkel with the turtles. Stop at Turtle Bay Resort for cocktails or dinner watching the sun go down. Get fresh shrimp in Kahuku. Visit Tropical Farms for a candy or a little Hawaiian show. http://www.to-hawaii.com/oahu/attrac...picalfarms.php
Stop along the windward coast to swim or snorkel. Drive back to Honolulu via Pali Overlook. Have dinner back in Waikiki at Keo's for great Thai. Sleep like a baby.

There is a nice two tank dive up the Waianae coast, 1st on a sunken minesweeper, the Mahi, 2nd in lava tubes (Makaha Caverns) nearby. I think it runs this time of year.
I booked through these guys http://www.oahuscubadive.com/ and it was a professionally run outfit.
I always try to have 36 hrs between a dive and a flight.....

Sorry to say, but I'm not a big fan of the Mahi anymore.
I first dove it in 1991 and it was awesome.
Last dive there was 2007. Almost 20 years later, having weathered innumerable storms, surges and the march of time, it is showing its age.

For my money (literally
) I still say the San Pedro and/or the YO-257 right off Waikiki are your best bets.
Good luck,
Ted

How did the trip go? What were you glad that you did? And what do you wish you did differently?
I'm booking a very similar trip in August and am quite curious.
Thanks.
