If you're a car buff, the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart is worth a visit if you're passing through. Heidelberg is also pretty accessible too and has a really great gothic feel, there's a really cool castle there and a great nightlife. You can take the S-bahn between any of the cities from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt, I find myself lumping them together since they're really part of one huge (albeit segmented) metropolitan area.

Weather is completely variable hence my comments earlier. We have had early winter as in last year when winter started in October and carried very late into the spring. Other times snow is almost non-existent.

On a side note, I don't think that OP is planning on commuting to/from Kentucky. 'Frankfort' is in America; 'Frankfurt' is in Germany.

I am not sure your schedule going to look like that day, but you can take and early train from Munich to Stuttgart and leave late afternoon (TGV Munich to Stuttgart, ICE Stuttgart-Frankfurt for 49 Euro 1st class) 6-7 hrs should be able to cover both museums. As for carry backpack to the museum, you should be fine, I carry mine along with Tripod to both museums. As a matter of fact, I saw a guy had a tripod with dolley in Mercedes Museum.
Good to know about the ticket and the backpack situation. The early morning TGV however is just too early for me even if it has 1st class for the price of 2nd later in the day. So right now I am thinking of leaving Munich around 1130-1230 and booking a 3 hour stopover in Stuttgart. I think that should be enough to get to at least the Porsche Museum and provide some buffer time between changing between all those trains.

Good Luck to you...

3 hours is nothing, better forget about the Porsche Museum.

Your timetable for S - Bahn: http://www2.vvs.de/vvs/AHF/vvs05_00005fa3.pdf

Departure: Normally every 15 min, but sometimes only every 30 min. 10 min to go with the S - Bahn. So you need in best case 15 min after starting to arrive the museum, in worst case 45 min. You have to add the time to arrive the S - Bahn and the time for the Luggage. Then you will have only roundabout 45 min for the museum in the worst case...

Cool

Berto, have a great trip and will look forward to your trip report. I have never been to Frankfurt, like the hotdog. Sorry for the spelling, have only typed in the airport code. We have always flown in and out of Munich. We want to do more train travel next trip so look forward to hearing about that.

This is why when I specified my 3 hour layover I specified it for the S-Bahn station Neuwirtshaus (Porscheplatz) instead of Stuttgart Hbf. In between S-Bahn and my ICE/EC connections I have 15+ minutes each. Should be plenty of time for me to deal with luggage and move towards the train (and should I not I could always cut museum time to 2.5 hours and take an earlier S-Bahn back).

No worries about the spelling.

Trip reports....
Last year was bad for me, in terms of posting one here on FT as I never actually got around to editing it. I had blogged it as I was on the go, but it was often written at the end of a long day and contained run-ons, repetition, and just bad grammar (that might have something to do with being an engineering major ) However, this year I have resolved to actually edit it and make sure it gets on the trip reports forum quickly. Watch out for it next month!
