BER receives its operating certificate!
I cannot believe it! No more delays.
Today Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (Willy Brandt) received its operating certificate to open and commence operations. Planned opening remains 31 October. Looks like the planned moves in November will go ahead.

I cant believe it either. The BER fiasco has been an ever present part of the background for the decade during which I have got to know Berlin. I have been learning the language through jokes about its many and varied failings. I cant imagine it actually operating.
Still, I dont believe the jokes are done just yet - they still need to prove they can actually run the place and I see Daldrup is suggesting BER is going to need another 1.8bn euros to avoid bankruptcy.
And like most comedies, this news is bittersweet for me as a fan of TXL. I remember thinking when I left Berlin on 17 March whether I might have had my last Currywurst in the old train carriage. Two cancelled trips later and highly sceptical about my next three in June and July, I think it might yet prove to be. Cue the next eight years of THF-style wrangling about what to do with it.
