I'm leaning toward using Sixt, but I'm curious, and I'm wondering what constitutes a "CDAR" and "IDAR" rental. They show a Peugeot 307 with auto transmission for the former and a BMW 1 Series 5-door for the latter. What else would qualify for those respective categories?
Thanks.
I wish I could afford the high end luxury stuff with lots of horsepower, but a small, fuel efficient engine will have to do. It's not much different than what I drive now, except it's different and newer.
Out of curiosity, when is rush hour Germany?
Thanks.

You should take this offer:
-Sixt has nice cars ... and nice managers too

-Mr. Adam Wilkes can help you to get automatic transmission; those cars are rare, at least in Germany

-In the morning and late afternoon.
-On weekends ... but mostly towards nicer places (seaside etc.)
-During a fair in Hannover
-At the beginning/end of school vacations in Berlin and/or Niedersachsen

If you want to try out driving on the German autobahn, the A2 BER-HAJ is certainly a route to try out. Its a completely rebuilt track, with no remnants of the old pre war GDR tracks. Its seems there is no construction planned either: http://www.bmvbs.de/bisliste.htm?bab=2
As far as an American driving on German roads is concerned, please inform yourself first. As there are many many servicemen on German roads, the US Armed Forces have many directives and advice websites. This (non USAF) is a good one: http://www.gettingaroundgermany.info/regeln.shtml , especially the Autobahn section.
So rent a Hertz/Europcar/Sixt car, pick a nice time to drive and enjoy the ride (please don't even think about sticking to 120, you will slow down the flow of traffic!)

Yes, I'm sure there are situations where it is safe to drive fast. I also know that driving fast can be exhilarating and fun - I still remember the kick I got some years ago, putting my foot down on a fairly empty Autobahn the moment we passed the "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" sign after leaving Belgium, and my husband falling about laughing in the passenger seat because he thought it was so funny that his docile wife had suddenly turned into a girl racer.
But... the death of my friend has certainly changed the way I drive (and I don't even think it was conscious). And I think there are too many people about who think they can drive fast and be safe, but who aren't as safe as they think they are. Personally I would prefer to see lower speed limits on public roads, with more racetracks opened to the public on non-race days for those who want to have fun driving fast.
But all that is just personal opinion (which I know others aren't going to share)... I hope the OP will enjoy his ride.
