Yeah, the non-daily thing is hurting D8 as an option. If they return to a more dense schedule then they will be a serious contender. 21 destinations is not that bad, definitely enough to make a dent in Finnairs yield.

Ex-HEL AY is certainly very strong, lots of frequency and direct flights. But HEL is no LON and my guess is that O&D traffic is not nearly strong enough to fill all of AY's extensive fleet. My guess is that it will be the connecting traffic where they will bleed the most. Why would I pay 2x for a TLL-HEL-LON when I get the same product as a direct TLL-LON on FR (and worse than on BT) at twice the travel time.
Ironically, this mostly affects the pax that they are trying to compete for with low prices, i.e. non-status passengers. Fortunately for AY, FR and alike artificially devalue their product by seating passengers in the same booking as far apart as possible turning boarding into some sort of zoo. I guess I maybe shouldn't have written this. AY might take this as inspiration.
For what it is worth I think at least in the short run it will increase their revenue though. Lots of Finnair's catchment area seems to lack capacity and frequency. In the long run this will hurt their brand. Booking my travel often less than 3 days in advance, fares on TLL-STN on FR are also often more expensive than AY's connecting flights. This of course doesn’t hold if you book 2 months in advance like the majority of travellers.

I'd love to say I won't fly them anymore after these changes, but realistically what changed? I never check bags and I actually don't credit to AY's own program. As a oneworld elite I will still be able to take a carry on. Outside of jetstar flights I had my bag weighed once on a W6 flight in BUD (rather sized- they didn’t care for the weight). Am I going to start hacking tickets together? Likely no. I recently had the choice between AY on TLL-HEL-HND (15h total) and FR/SK/CX on TLL-ARN-AMS-HKG-HND (30h total). Not hard to guess which one I chose. *A would have had some options but I don't like them either.

AY is weighting hand bags. This happened to me on early morning flight to OUL last week. Every bag waiting for boarding were measured, rude threat of 8 kg limit and 60 € gate check in fee. But the threat wasn’t enforced in the end.

So they announced it, measured and then just didn't weigh them?

KLM: Y: 12kg; J: 18kg
SAS: 8kg but does not include duty-free or airport purchases
BA: 2 x 23 kg
TK: Y: 1 x 8kg + personal item (max 4kg); J: 2 x 8kg + personal item (max 4kg)
LH: Y: 1 x 8kg; J: 2x 8 kg.
DY: 10kg, Flex-ticket: 15 kg.
BT: 8kg, for additional fee 12 kg
Easyjet: 15 kg

FR: no limit (10kg for the bigger bag)
BT: the free cabin baggage limit is 12kg for Executive and VIP levels (no fee). At least earlier the weight limit was not applied to the VIP members (who have 2 cabin bags and a personal item), not sure how this is now.

The 8kg is totally impractical, let alone across two bags (one big one small). Bag alone is 3-4kg add a laptop 2kg. So 2-3kg for everything else for a short stay. Let's hope they don't enforce.

At a guess 12-15kg is more typical and reasonable. I think BA has an over-riding policy that you "must be able to lift it up yourself". Size is what makes boarding slow, not weight. And plane dependent too. On ATR they should provide luggage loading at boarding like everyone else on the Continent.

- size 55x45x25 cm
- you need to be able to lift it yourself
- max 15 kg

This would sound reasonable. I accept some upper limit as the overhead bins have weight limits. So if everyone from ZRH is flying in with a rollaboard full of gold, it won't work...

Had a short discussion with CS about the new luggage policies and heard that there apparently will be some routes with different policies (USA and Japan flights were mentioned specifically, so perhaps JV related).

For myself, the weight limits on the carry-on are the biggest issue, as 8kg is surprisingly little. I have also enjoyed the free 32 kg in J. I also do not see why they would want to make such strict restrictions in J aswell, but we’ll have to wait and see how this will look in practice.

In reality, BT doesn't enforce weight limits in any class. I used to buy the 12kg, but since noone ever checked I stopped buying the extra hand luggage eventually. The A220 has plenty of overhead space anyway so they genuinely don't seem to care. I think the option to buy the 12kg is just free money for them.

riku2 May 22, 2023 7:06 am

With all bags over 23kg now attracting a charge (regardless of status) it made me remember the old luggage status benefit where instead of one extra bag of 23kg you could instead raise the limit for one bag to 32kg which was very useful if you didn't know how much you would bring back on a trip .. but that was perhaps 10 years ago and since they are solely focused on revenue I doubt they consider such a policy.

Ah, judging by this, there should now be a considerable amount of gold in HEL if I look at my flight stats.

Restricting the onboard capacity for J means 33% drop in actual cargo capacity. Maybe we should start looking for the lightest luggage setup? Removing the luggage tag and inside divider saves 200 grams. Wonder how much removing Finnair logo saves?

Finnair Rimowa Cabin trolley is 3,80kg.

App update. Now shows detailed allowance but with mistakes... At least they could make an effort to display correct allowances lol. #thinair

FRA duty free shop sign

Even Ryanair… Specifically mentioned. But soon they have to add a sticker below “all airlines” with the note: Does not apply to Finnair

I am not on twitter but if anyone wants to use this photo and tweet it so we can have some publicity, please feel free to use my pic as you wish.

Let us usher in the era of topping up decreasing baggage allowances with repurposed duty free shopping bags.

It is the gift that keeps on giving. Perhaps Finnair is hoping to claw back some of the bag costs by collecting overweight penalty from Lumos?
