Change flights & ticket to Flex?

I've got a trip booked to NYC in a week, but will most likely not be able to leave due to unexpected delays in getting my passport.

Due to the flexible policy, I can change my flights once. My tickets are in Economy Light. When checking out the available flights to change to, Economy Flex shows up as an option.

This doesn't make much sense to me. It looks like I could rebook myself to Economy Flex, and then cancel the booking completely and receive a full refund? What am I missing? Is this a loophole to get even Light tickets cancelled with a full refund?

Often with airlines the refund / change rules stay according to your original booking. So likely the rules stay in Light. Definitely poorly done if it gives you the impression that Flex rules apply in case they don‘t.

But to know for sure you need to try out.

Eh, tried posting a screenshot but don't have enough posts here to post one.

But it is indeed very misleading if the refund / change rules don't actually change if I choose Economy Flex in the change flights screen.
It quite clearly states that refund is permitted. It shows in principle the very same Economy Light/Classic/Flex options (and their rules) as when booking a completely new ticket. Wonder if they would in such case only refund the fare difference I pay for changing the flights, should I ask for a refund.

But I'm not going to chance this, although I am curious whether this would work.

I have the same question. Anyone have first hand experience with this?

I actually went through and changed my Classic Economy to Flex Economy because the difference was smaller than what I would have to pay for seat selection for my itinerary. Then I chatted with the agent about canceling this new Flex ticket for a full refund. The agent insisted that I would get a full refund, even though I was very explicit with him that this was originally a non refundable Classic ticket that I later changed to Flex.

I am tempted to test this and cancel this newly Flex itinerary - for an additional $100 or so I can replace my itinerary with a Premium Economy (Classic). What is extremely annoying is that if I try to change my itinerary to Premium Economy online, it gives me a quote of $2590 for Premium Economy Classic instead of the $100 or so actual fare difference. And what is even more strange is that the website is giving me a smaller quote ($2000 even) for Premium Economy Flex... And the agent insists this is not a bug, it's perfectly normal... If I were to buy this itinerary out right, Premium Economy Classic fare is $1953...

Had the same issue recently, wanted to change to a ticket with the same price as my original one and they wanted thousands of euros for it, absurd.

At least I learned a valuable lesson, changeable tckets are not actually changeable apparently (in practice), so that's good to know.
ffay005 and intuition like this.

This was already a problem before Covid whilst you could change Value tickets (partially refundable) to PRO (fully refundable). I never tried, so I don't know, but do inform the results if you do try.

Might be the wrong thread, but currently trying to change an economy classic ticket for the second time. First time everything went smoothly as expected, original ticket was ~1100 and new ticket was ~$1125 so I just paid the $25 difference and change was made. But now chatting with the Whatsapp team they told me the value of that ticket was ~$650 since that was the base fare and the rest of the ticket was taxes so a change to the new ticket (worth ~$1200) would be $550 not $75. I am quite confident this is wrong, but can't find the economy classic terms and conditions again. Anyone else have this issue before?

Says: "However, please note that you need to pay the difference between the original and new fare if your ticket is no longer available at its initial price. If your new ticket is at a lower price than the original one, we cannot refund the difference. This applies to all voluntary changes in travel dates." at https://www.finnair.com/us-en/freque...dates--2146620

A question about ticket type change and refundability

I need to change the date of my flight, and noticed I could also change the ticket type (from economy classic to flex) for a reasonable cost.

The available flight options are so bad that it got me thinking; If I change the ticket type to flex, can I cancel my ticket and get my all of my money back (not just the new charge but also what I've already paid)? In other words, does the ticket type change make the entire ticket refundable or just the upcharge portion of it? Anyone have data points on this?

If I can get my money back, I'd be happy to cancel my AY ticket, pocket the money, and use points on another airline instead.

Just the upcharge becomes flex, not the whole sum paid.
