Out of curiosity, on which long-haul flights does Finnair NOT serve a "Business Light" / Midnight meal" etc. one-tray meal, but actually does it properly, one dish at a time?

Catering changes 12 Sep

As some may have already noticed, Tommy Myllymäki's "Autumn menu" started on 12 Sep on flights ex-HEL. As usual, the menus are available here.

The new signature dishes seem to be:

Starter
  • Celeriac and Wästerbotten cheese with truffle vinaigrette
Main courses
  • Baked cod with crayfish sauce, chanterelles, tomatoes and new potatoes
  • Roasted pork belly with tarragon sauce, cep mushroom purée and autumn vegetables
  • Creamy cep mushroom soup with smoked reindeer (Weirdly listed as a main course also in day time menus and not present on all routes, e.g. missing from HEL-JFK)

Some routes have a dish named "Chef's special", either outbound (e.g. HEL-NRT/KIX/NGO) or inbound (e.g. BKK-HEL). Is that just a random dish that the local catering happens to have available that day?

A new Jymy ice cream flavor Blackcurrant introduced. More importantly, now there seems to be a "proper" dessert (cake) available instead of those sad "petit fours". I suppose the "new" 'Nordic Business Class' service is now on all routes? At least "kahvikutsut" is mentioned also in the lowly BKK-HEL menu. :D

Please post pics and comments how those turn out. :)

At least AY141/142 BKK has non-light service. I even enjoyed dine-on-demand on AY142 yesterday. J loads were quite light and the FA serving my aisle suggested that I could eat whenever I wanted. Perfect, since I had quite a substantial breakfast at my hotel right before heading for the airport. ^

Tatankar Sep 14, 2018 6:25 am

Has anyone tried the Reindeer recently, people say good things and I am wondering whether it is worth pre-booking this rather than the mains on the current menu (flying to BKK next week).

ffay005 Sep 14, 2018 6:48 am

The reindeer is very tasty and I can warmly recommend it. Just had it last week. Please ask the cabin crew not to keep it in the oven for too long because it might get dry and liverlike. They'll know what you're talking about...

I had it a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. One of the best meals I've had in the sky. It didn't looks particularly impressive but the taste was outstanding.

Reindeer is always worth trying, indeed and my personal favourite is the smoked trout mentioned upthread here with pictures in post 151: here
It is not part of the harvest season menu, but can be ordered separately for flights outbound from HEL, or at least was availabe 2 weeks ago.

kanamurva Sep 18, 2018 6:06 am

I've only flown lh J 2 times in my life, HEL-HKT (Phuket)-HEL but I had the reindeer departing from HEL. I was of course dazzled by the general experience but still that meal was wonderful. Definitely something, that I would've been more than happy in a normal fancy restaurant. What is less discussed here are the wines that ay offers: they had 2 different red wines that went really well with the dish. All in all, the general level of wines was very high imo. This is really a great added value if you compare to sh flights where the wines are mediocre at best.

BlueNordicSky Sep 25, 2018 1:36 pm

Probably not many people have experienced this, here's a menu from CKG-HEL in August. I'm guessing the main dish is usual China/HK but at least the appetizer was local. It was nothing special, mind you.

Another solid J-class dining experience on AY10, which seems to be my most frequent AY long-haul flight.

Cheese and ice cream for dessert

Main course Barramundi with mash and broccoli plus some unidentified yellow vegetable. The fish was very moist and tender, one of the better airplane fishes.

Meaning that while AY caters J (and Y) ex-DEL (and crew meals ex-HEL!), you will get an ex-HEL meal by ordering a special meal...

I had a chat with one of the cabin crew. She told me that everything is return catered except bottles of water. Not sure if true or not.

OT: They also said that they were told not to leave the hotel unless necessary due to the very bad pollution.

on22cz Nov 10, 2018 1:27 pm

Seeing the recent photos, my dreamer thoughts pop-up... Had they removed the tray and served it course by course, it would be such a nice service. Add some cool Marimekko designed tableware and with the taste of usual AY meals, we'd be looking at an amazing soft product. For the design of tableware, I'd suggest AY's management flying EVA (BR) even on some short Asian hops. The service wouldn't really become slower, as waiting for the whole tray to be served vs. eating course by course takes pretty much the same time. AY, please!

By return catered, you mean catered ex-HEL, right?

In January, I was told by a CC who seemed very knowledgeable that all pax meals are catered ex-DEL. You could also see it, the tin foil packaging was different from HEL and the butter was Indian etc. All crew meals, OTOH, were catered ex-HEL and kept in dry ice. Of course, things might change over time, but it would take quite a lot of galley space to cater everything ex-HEL.

That‘s what I mean yes. Alternatively, they could probably also load it as „cargo“ below instead of in the galley.

Everything is from AY kitchen in HEL due to hygiene issues in DEL, this was changed last summer.

It´s even harder to go on a trip without pre-ordering your food :-)

R2 Nov 15, 2018 1:18 am

On a flight earlier this week I noticed one thing they've updated...you know how the espresso machines are not working on about 50% of the flights. They have now added a footnote on the menu card below the coffee section: Espresso, Cafe Latte *available on select flights only.

What a cunning way of saying we have an espresso machine but a) forgot to load the capsules b) didn't do the maintenance for it c) can't be bothered to turn it on cause we're not quite sure how to operate it d) to serve instant coffee is just fine for an airline that aspires to offer the best LH business class in Europe.

intuition Nov 15, 2018 2:02 am

Sad to hear that. Good coffee could and should be a part of any concept that wants to distinguish itself above the mediocre.

The panic is over! Menus from 21st November are now available on the website.

Interesting to see that the previous "leisure routes" of HKT/KBV/SGN no longer have a simplified menu: there is the normal-looking choice of 2 appetisers and 3 entrees.

Separate question - does anyone have recent experience with VLML long-haul meals? Are they any good, or is it just economy-style pasta-with-tomato-sauce? I'm on the HKT flight in a few weeks, would sometimes eat fish if the veg option is awful, but there are no meat-free breakfast options.

Thanks a lot

Well, it's never been pasta ex-HEL but almost always the light meal ex-Asia is pasta and some sauce. The food ex-HEL usually is something like falafel balls, veggie sushi, potato mash with mushrooms and tofu or something similar. In my opinion it's not up to the standards of "normal" food, which is a pity.

Do note that ex-HEL VLML is also vegan and gluten-free, which also restricts the options they can offer.

florens Nov 20, 2018 6:40 am

See my post upthread with an example of a vegan meal.

AY102 Menu

1 Attachment(s)
AY102 HKG-HEL yesterday. Day flight which feels looong (just under 10 hours) so a great opportunity for AY to deliver on their promise of a 'Nordic nature signature menu with the best, fresh tastes and seasonal ingredients'

'Finnish traditions signature dishes by executive chef Jaakko Sorsa are served on Finnair's long-haul flights leaving Hong Kong'. This is a bit misleading as there was exactly one appetizer by Mr Sorsa on this flight and none of the main courses.

One of the Mains was 'Chef's Special' but not by Mr Sorsa. I asked the FA what the Chef's Special was and she said it's Chicken with rice. I said it doesn't sound very special to me. The reply came back 'Yes, but it is Chinese style'. Oh well I thought, if that makes it special I rest my case...

For starter I had the Roasted beef which was really nice. Main course Salmon was nothing to write home about.

The mid-flight Finnish coffee service 'Kahvikutsut' was a big letdown. They really should call it students' coffee party. Or what do you think of the following:
- Instant coffee only ('as the espresso machine not working today')
- Cold cinnamon rolls and some industrial looking and tasting super sweet cake that seemed like it had spent its life of several days tightly wrapped in plastic
- Savory treats consisted of dry rye crisps and potato crisps (yes the infamous Pirkka-sipsit, I saw the bag in the galley later)

Later they also served tuna sandwiches - again tigthly wrapped in plastic...the type you would have found at petrol station cafeterias 20 years ago.

The 'self-service snack bar' in the galley was the usual AY standard...cheap peanut-raisin mix, some candy, pirkka-sipsit and Fazer chocolates.

I really wish they would spend just that little bit more to raise the bar and make it feel more premium and less like the outcome of 'how can we spend the least and get away with it'. CX, QR and even BA do a much better job on the mid-flight snacks but what AY offers makes even KL look good.

OT: interestingly instead of the usual all HK cabin crew they had a spanish purser and two japanese FAs.

AY 142 BKK-HEL
DEC 18

As this was my first long haul flight on AY as Plat, I was curious to see how the service and catering would be. Some parts were really nice, some felt bit underwhelming.

The purser came to greet me at the beginning of the flight. She was one of those old-school-type pursers with quite weird choice of words “Your personal server (palvelija) will be xxxxx”! Alrighty! My personal server was really nice, younger guy, who was very attentive and remembered all the requests I had. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e094b6ad4.jpeg

Double Bilberry cocktail with salmon canapé. The cocktail was surprisingly refreshing, not too sweet at all. I could have easily had second one!
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...16e58d0de.jpeg

On with the meal. One of the major surprises was that there were no trays used, so the service felt a notch upgraded. Appetizer was shrimp and scallops, tiny portion but tasty.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c2aa853e4.jpeg

Main course of salmon with potatoes. Salmon tasted ok, potatoes not so much. Presentation was above the Finnair average, maybe the dill garnish made the trick.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6ed46f7cd.jpeg

Cheeses. Pretty plain, ice wine was nice.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2eabf93c0.jpeg

Ice cream and chocolates. The presentation is cheap, other airlines offer the same kind of tubs in Y.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ac5c0d050.jpeg

Kahvikutsut. I like the idea that AY has some distinctively Finnish elements on their service. However, the selection was not properly presented and it seemed that there were no savory items. So no chips. The cinnamon bun was warmed but quite tasteless, the cookie was forgettable but the cake was surprisingly nice. Tea was quite bitter.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1782e17a3.jpeg

Service before landing. I think this was a positive surprise, as the menu stated tuna salad, I was expecting canned tuna. But the tuna was fresh and tasty as were the other parts of the salad.

MId flight snacks seemed to be only some candy and nutmix which was put on offer in front of the seats on row one. I saw the famous Pirkka potato chips bag on the counter in the mid-galley, but was I really supposed to help myself directly from the bag? So as far as I see, there really was no snacks as I don't count the candy and nuts. It seemed that the meal service was on-demand, as my personal servant asked me, when I would like to have my lunch and several people opted to eat later.

I will have LH J travel with kids during the Christmas break and wonder are there some special kids menus available in J? I'm actually thinking should I just try to preorder Burger Feast meal (Nordic Bistro menu for Y) for them as it would probably serve the purpose well. :D Have any of you ordered these burgers to J?

May be the case for pre orders, but when traveling with a JR ORD-HEL in J the otherwise inefficient and forgetful purser had hotdogs and other kid friendly food in the galley catered from ORD.

I have no idea how the system actually works so YMMV.

FordYaris Dec 10, 2018 11:23 am

I requested CHML through CS for SH J and the kids got mashed potatoes, meat balls, boiled carrots and some sort of creamy sauce. Cucumber sticks for appetizer and dessert was same as for adults (apple pie). In addition also small portion of Moomin candy and "trip"-juice.
