I don't know, outbound I was already asleep when they came around with the wet towels :)

Had it on ay142 too last week. It was a very positive surprise :)

I've had it twice now and both times it was a huge disappointment. It was mushy and didn't taste fresh at all. I really hope that was just bad luck on my part and the next time it will be better.

Do they automatically come prepared in this sauce? Or is it something the Flight Attendant adds separately when preparing the meal that they can leave off?

I asked the flight attendant today which meal option she would recommend and she said they're all decent except for the pork in black bean sauce.

Still need the soup as a starter option, to go with the garlic bread and everything is good again.

I ended up switching this to the Reindeer option...hopefully that'll be halfway decent.

Let me know how that goes. I thought I pre-ordered it but apparently I selected the wrong option.

I tried to check the meal options for my December flight, but got:

The meal options for your flight are not yet available, as our meal selection is renewed 3–4 times a year.
The new meal choices will be updated on our website around one week before the change. To make your meal selection, please come back closer to your flight, latest 24 hours before departure.
Anybody got a clue when they upload the new menus?

1-2 weeks before the change to the new menu. Current menu is until 4 December.

The reindeer itself was pretty good. However, the sides it came with we're very meh.

When checking for the meals on my next flight I could read this on the menu:

Feeling peckish? Throughout the flight, we will serve a variety of snacks in the cabin.
Sandwiches, hamburgers, savoury snacks,

Did anyone ever ordered a hamburger as a snack? If so - how is it.

My friend did, it was ok considering that you are at 34000ft.

needs copious amounts of liquid salad to flush that down.

So I will bring some pickles and tomatoes from the lounge and this will become a Hesburger DeLuxe :D (but not joking looks way better then the "beer sandwich" I had in the past).

OH-LGG Oct 19, 2019 12:28 pm

After beetroot crap in HEL lounges that hamburger can really be tasty.

TTL Oct 20, 2019 1:51 am

Heading to MIA in 9 days, but after seeing the biz menu options, there will definitely be need for hamburgers both ways. Only chicken, fish, or veggie options available. Even though planning to spend some time in the Plat wing while layovering.

PS. About "katotaan" it may have been me on JFK-HEL 333 J a couple of years ago, asking for a cold dinner tray soon after takeoff to be able to get some sleep. Which I eventually also received complimented with a snarky remark, that there are many other customers in the business class, not just I. I never got an answer to my question, if everyone else were OWEs and traveling on paid biz tickets...

Chance to gain back ancillary revenue from fellow pax. Soon you will be on plus side.

Reminds me of one trip, me and wife in business, a friend couple at 58Ö. Our J food was inedible, andour friends had a bag of self-baked korvapuusti with them. Soon into service, the FA came back to us from behind: gretings from 58Ö and handed delicious cinnamon rolls to us :D

Probably.

Even AY's business class portions are so tiny nowadays so why dont start with delicious Mc meal.

I would like to see Kotipizza take away service in HEL nonSchengen side.

I'm flying JFK-HEL-SIN this week in Business class. As this is the first time I'm flying AY in Business, I thought I should pre-order my meals. I selected the option for each that is fish. Are you saying I am better just waiting to see what the choices are on the flight itself rather than preordering?

I don't understand your logic here. If you want/need to eat fish, then you'll preorder the fish to ensure they don't run out. They won't have any fish dishes on board that aren't available for preorder. (The chef's special is invariably chicken...)

Note that for flights ex-HEL, there's an additional fish dish available only via preorder.

Many flights have a salmon soup available from the outstation. If you have had a meal in the lounge, then this soup is a great choice if all you need is a lighter meal.

Hi. Thanks for your response. I wasn't saying I must have a fish selection, I was just saying that the fish option listed was most appealing of the three options listed. What I was asking was whether, as a general matter, the non-preorder selection offered on the flight was better than the pre-orders.

ffay005 Oct 28, 2019 5:20 am

Okay. All main courses that they will have on board are available for preorder (and then some, ex-HEL). So in all cases, it pays off to preorder.

Ed Size Oct 28, 2019 5:25 am

Also if you like fish - you can give the seafood option a try. I had it on my last short haul and it was excellent (also the raw vegetarian was kind of good - at least for short haul)

On my two recent long-hauls, the chef's special was stuffed pasta (with mushrooms) and burger beef.

I tried the "Food Lover's Treat" that's available only as a pre-order ex-HEL. Grilled whitefish. I honestly thought the default fish option, baked cod, was better.

Okay. I haven't asked in a while. Every time I asked, it was always chicken... Good to have more variety. Chef's Special sounds like the cheapie cheap option, though.

HEL-BKK VGML two weeks ago. Well what can I say. I had better meals in SH business. But this was way better than bkk-hel last week 😁

Hi,

Any experience on low-lactose meals in Business both intra-Europe and intercontinental? Booking tickets and was wondering if I should pre-order my meal. Is it worth it?

Luckily low-lactose isn't a must for me, though I'd certainly prefer it if its any good.

Pics are also appreciated :)

Welcome to FT and the AY forum!

With the number of lactose intolerants in Finland and considering AY's Asian presence, I'd be surprised if AY actually served lactose-rich foods. Most likely, all their dairy products are HYLA (see https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/HYLA + Google translate), ie low-lactose.

seldomrfly Nov 21, 2019 1:51 pm

Agree with ffay005.
Hardly any catered food contains lactose anymore.
Creams and other dairy products used in professional kitchens are almost always non-lactose or low-lactose.

Olperoo Nov 22, 2019 12:05 am

Thanks for the responses :)

Think I'll take my chances and see the menu on the plane.

For my HEL-DEL flight tomorrow I've pre-ordered the reindeer. (First time since 2015, though not sure if it is still the same dish). In your experience, do I need to remind the FA not to "overcook" the already overcooked :) reindeer, or do they know it?

What I routinely do is that when they come and ask for your choice of appetizer (and often also state that you've preordered your main course), I ask them not to keep the reindeer in the oven too long. Some FAs know this, and I've actually had one FA complete my sentence for me :) Most don't seem very familiar with it, but I tell them that it turns liver-like and is not very good anymore, and my experience is that they take this seriously (often asking during the meal how it turned out). Just be friendly about it, and it'll be fine. ^

Thanks a lot! I'll do that :)

BTW, if any of you are flying back from JFK (maybe also other US outstations have that), make sure to try the "roasted pork collar with crushed fingerling potatoes, broccoli creamed spinach and caramel pork-jus". There are a number of words in that name that I have no clue about :D, but it was by far the best meal I've had on a plane!

Well, I had this main from ORD in October. Nothing fancy, but adequate comfort food for an autumn evening I suppose.
