avec
I see that in most of the menus after the first meal serving, there is "coffee, tea, avec"
What is "avec"? In French it means "with" but with what? |

Yup, this is french influence from the old days. Very common in Sweden and Finland, both colloquial and formal language. Apparently short for 'du café avec le petit verre'. Nowadays 'avec' has turned into a proper noun in our languages and is treated as such, people can say things like "can you fetch the avec?"
In some parts of Finland 'avec' has a second usage, corresponding to the english term 'plus one' on invitations. At some point in time FInnair lounge pages actually just said 'avec' instead of describing guest policy in detail! |

Also, I wonder if they go with the normal menu or actually have something special made for the inaugural one...
On MMB the only special was that you can order a bottle of Champagne for the flight for 45€. Why would you do that in J ;) |

I've been away from Finnair for about 6 months, and I must say it looks to me that longhaul food has been upgraded a notch, quality and presentation.
Here are main course from AY105 to NKG. This is the inaugural flight, but it had no special food service. Instead, this is the menu for "Chinese week" which lasts one month (!). Service was incredibly slow. But food was very good. New cocktail list sees the "Blue skye" retired. Replaced with "Golden sky", quickly renamed by humorous FT'ers as golden shower. Champagne and cloudberry liqouer. First sip was very strange, but taste grew on me. (Or taste buds gave up) https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...266ad3fa96.jpg Starter: Option gravlax. Salmon was good, but the real winner here was potato-salad beneith, kind of french style, fresh potatoe and vinaegrette mix. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...019bc52e2b.jpg Main option Smoked rainbow trout. Very nicely presented, great taste. Fish could have been sliglty more "oily" in my opinion, but was fine as is. Loved the fresh potatotes. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...88f4cbc9e7.jpg Detail https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...59df3604a3.jpg |
Flight 106, NKG-HEL. Again "Chinese week" menu.
First service Amuse Not much taste (I wouldn't mind a bit of bite in a Amuse https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7c20f6c8b0.jpg Starter: Option Duck breast and shitake Great presentation, great combination of textures. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...85ecae025d.jpg Starter Duck and Shitake Main option: Roulad?! Amazing taste. Sauce really lifted the dish https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9012118070.jpg Marketing concept: The sonic flight So together with food there are specail headphones with pre-recorded mp3 with "natural sounds to enhance taste". Did it work? Not sure it changed the taste, but it was an atmospheric experience, that's for sure. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...575af5070f.jpg Cheese: Locally source (china) The green mould cheese had really a bite to it. Very intense and lovely. Dried peach (I think) was very good. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bcc2a57348.jpg |

Flight 106, second service
I slept through the newly created "Fika" service, ie the afternoon coffe and cookies (but got revenge) Light meal: Option chicken-couscous salad Maybe not a winner, but nothing wrong with the meal. Just enough of the green stuff (I prefer salads to be more than just leaves). PLenty of couscous below. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a936b543ab.jpg Was offered cookies with the after meal coffe and opted for the Finnish apple cake, promised to be "a mouthful, very sweet and enough for you". I took the advice and wasn't disappointed. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5f0b31b109.jpg |

That golden sh... errr... sky is a bit too sweet to my taste, but if one asks to half the amount of cloudberry liqueur, it improves it alot! |
Some late field reports...
April 27, HEL-BKK. First, the menu. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6d18904bb6.jpg The best thing about the starter was karjalanpiirakka (the karelian pie). Both the salmon and the accompanying horseradish were fine by themselves, but as a mix didn't work as well. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...24b618395e.jpg For the main course, I chose the fish. Yes, I know. Anyone who has seen the movie Airplane knows that you should never have fish on the airplane. Nevertheless, I did. And it was pretty much in line with what I've experienced previously from Finnair J when flying out of Helsinki: simple, humble looks, but extremely tasty. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...38549a0fcf.jpg And finally, dessert cheeses and ice cream. Of course at this point I'm drunk and tired so my judgment is less objective, but it still was nice. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a322c16050.jpg A very satisfying flight overall, foodwise and otherwise. I've often been please with the food in Finnair's long-haul J flights to Asia and this was another pleasant experience. |
May menu. Finnair HEL-HKG on May 17.
Ummm... yea. I didn't take a picture of the menu. Stupid me. Amuse-bouche still same as before. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b7e90e18ac.jpg For the main course, I took the fish (again, I know I shouldn't). As the usual Finnair formula when flying out of HEL, it was plain-looking but very tasty. Nieriä, aka nordic char. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ce03e8c847.jpg I actually prefer the foods flying out of HEL than coming back. Even places famous for great food like HKG and BKK don't quite match the tastiness of airplane food when stacked against HEL. |

I didn’t take any photos, but I flew SFO-HEL-SFO a few weeks ago and thought the food was quite good. Not EK F, but certainly pretty tasty, even out of SFO. Food on the way back from HEL was very good, including the karjalanpiirakka or however you spell that, along with the Indian curry snack before landing. Great crews too. |
Flew SFO-HEL-PRG on A330 & A321 in J Service was great and food was pretty tasty FA accidentally gave me the wrong starter so I got to try both.

Very tasty midnight meal on HEL-SIN (though I skipped the main) ^
Also, Singaporean crew very status aware, I was addressed by name from the moment I boarded, got first choice of meals and first service, several times checked if I'm OK ^ |
Hello there! I've got an upcoming ORD-HEL flight later this summer and was wondering about how AY handles vegetarian meals in J. Is it comparable to the normal J meals or do the just serve the same thing you'd get in Y? I've set my preference to non-dairy vegetarian in my profile and see no way to change it now. Will that change at the 30 day mark? Thanks! |

The second meal usually (especially from outports) is a vegetable pasta. |
If you look at Dantorp videos on youtube you can see some examples of the AY veg J meals.
If you want your preference changes you can use the chat function on the AY site and they'll change whatever you'd like. Worked well for me.

AY's vegetarian meals are alright in J, they have a J vegetarian meal. However, I would say it is not necessarily up to the standards of the meat options. Normally, the appetizer is something like vegetarian sushi or a salad with pomegranate seeds and tofu slices. The main is usually falafel balls or something made from soy. It's usually pretty good. As a dessert, they've loaded a fruit platter for you but I've always gotten ice cream or something else from the actual menu just by asking.

Hello :)
I very recently had my first long haul flight with Finnair, JFK-HEL. Unfortunately, while the service was decent, I must say that for me it has been the worst meal ever in a premium cabin, and usually I eat everything without much complain. Appetizers and main course served together on a tray. Appetizer consisted in a small plate of green salad (with dressing to add), and another plate with 2 slices of cured salmon and beetroot carpaccio in cubes + some not identiied other vegetable... everything freezing cold! The main was swordfish steak with roasted sweet potatoes: fish was very dry, and the potatoes looked more like boiled than roasted. Taste was not of my like and I couldn't finish them. Bread was ok. As dessert I choose the ice cream, a little tube of Häagen-Dazs, served so frozen that no spoon could penetrate it. I think it took 15 minutes minimum to melt enough to start eating. I didn't try breakfast as I wanted to maximize sleep time. I was very disappointed in the quality, especially after having tasted short haul breakfast (decent) and short haul lunch (now that was very good, with a particularly tasty risotto) going from HEL to LHR. I still have a long haul with AY, again on JFK-HEL service. Now I'm curious to see if I was just unlucky or it's the norm. However, adding the aircraft state and the related IFE, I don't think I will choose again AY for US trips. |
Oh, it's the norm. AY catering ex-JFK is terrible. Probably only ex-DEL is worse. Next time, ask them to bring the ice cream together with your tray. They might roll their eyes but that way it'll have time to thaw. Otherwise it's rock hard if they don't bother to take it out of the carbon ice in time. |

+1. For breakfast they usually serve 'Freshly baked bagels' which are cold and definitely not fresh. A more apt description would be 'straight from the plastic bag'.
Out of curiosity, is mostly the same also from other US cities or it's just JFK that's horrible? |

MY service & food out of SFO was quite decent. The breakfast didn't look great but tasted fine.

Be aware that some of the menus on the Finnair web page for long haul flights are not updated. Yesterday ORD-HEL had menu 0618, but the menu on the web page was still 0518. So the food as diffrent. |

smoked trout i had this month HEL-SIN was perhaps the best J meal i had in a while. Presentation is nothing special but tasted really good. what made this dish so special is they had intense wood smoke aroma, in a way some 5* restaurent serve their smoked dish. i dont know how they smoked it cuz cabin during preparation for a meal i smelled it. appetizer salmon was also very tasty. i would happily pay 40-50 usd for set of 2 dishes on ground. glad i stayed awake at 1am local time to eat tthis, very impressedhttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...92fbd69bcb.jpg. .

To open that statement, I explain this way: I use to try being very smiley and wish cabin crew a very good flight when entering the airplane. Even in the case that boarding etc prior has been a catastrophe and I might be on bad mood. I simply believe that offering that smile they might remember your face later on in the cabin and be more nice. The other way around, I suspect that if I board the plane and simply overtake cabin crew at the door without eye-contact or rather disgust, they might remember my face and be grumpy when coming to service. What else? |
adding salt to previous, my smile is sometimes so wide that my wife grunts me about being flirting :D :D :D with cabin crew. Oh well, not so seriously but she teases me about that sometimes ;)
|
Well, I for one think about it this way: if I want someone to be nice to me, then certainly I will be nice to them. It's common courtesy, and works both ways. Sure, I will complain if I find something wrong, but that can also be done without attacking the person you're complaining to (most likely it isn't that person's actual fault, anyway). Also, if you need a small favour, asking nicely and humbly will go a long way.

What else? On this particular flight the young-ish male FA working my aisle was very proactive, topping up my pre-departure drink etc. When we approached Finland, he came and asked whether I was still up for one more glass of champagne, "it would be such a shame to throw away such good drink". What could I do?!? Also, purser came over to introduce herself, we chatted a bit about upcoming vacations etc. At the end of the flight she came over again, asked about the flight, food, service etc. (AFAICT there were two Plats in the cabin.) |
HEL-XIY in June. Since I had previously had the salmon and rainbow trout (as posted by fakecd above), which were absolutely excellent, I took the alternative and went for the chicken.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ab8fde7db0.jpg Menu card https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4473ed17d3.jpg The chicken The chicken was all right, but it was nowhere close to the quality of the delicious smoked rainbow trout. If they have this menu the next time around, I will definitely do what they tell you not to in the movie Airplane... have the fish. |
I’m on a flight to SIN right now and experiencing some very minimalistic service. The aperitif served along with amuse bouche was water. With dinner they asked if I wanted water. I had to separately call the crew back to ask if they serve wine. No cheese was mentioned even if it was on the menu. Nobody asked if I wanted it, or a digestif - or even coffee or tea. and of course everything served on the same tray.... Perhaps our 2.45 am departure and 3-hour delay had something to do with this, but on a 11-hour flight you’d think there was time if someone wanted the full meal.... |
