There is an explanation to why they have wrecked the site, for example on https://www.finnair.com/se-sv/newfinnair
Main reason is they wanted a mobile site, and do not care about desktop users. They also claim they aim to have the full site running by end of 2019 There is a feedback form (that consists of only one question) Here is a list of companies to boycott (the "dedicated experts" that have been involved in development) : Frantic, Houston Inc, Nitor, Nextage Design, CGI and Amadeus |
New site is a total disaster. Nothing works end to end.

I just cant believe they had the courage to put this live, while so much about it is broken, and while so many pages still refer to the old website. My god. |
Some IT manager's performance evaluation probably required the new site deployed by end of 1H2019.

Transferring points under "Friends and Family"
finnair.com/fi_fi (new site, Finnair.fi redirects here these days) - "service unavailable for the moment" finnair.com/fi/fi (old site) - "transfer of points successful" Bravo, I say, bravo! |

I went to the site to book a simple r/t flight, CPH-HEL. Can't book for june 2020, as calendar only allows trips to be booked <11 months out, unless you trick the interface. Gave up.
Went on to OTA and found the flights 18€ cheaper (≈20% "discount") and quoted in my national currency (and not in DKK - AY site only sells tickets in the currency of departure). Despite the annoying OTA sales pitches of "insurance", "premium CS", "extra bags", "Seat selection" and all other crap options you need to de-select, the "experience" was way better than what AY offers. Only issue was I was not allowed to add FF#. Booked the flight. Went to finnair app, added the flight to my account. Got error "We couldn't access your AY+ profile". Went to the site again to add the flight there instead, and found out it was already added despite earlier error message. Went to seat selection and got error message "Seat has already been purchased". Indeed, I was seated in 4A, ie front Y row, with entire rest of cabin unoccupied. I believe all the OTAs are joining the salutes and 'Bravos' over this new and improved AY site! |

At least for me booking a trip usually involves heavy comparison of flight options, hotels, prices, events, schedules etc.. where the UI lacks needed features and in most cases the mobile site/apps don't have all the functionalities/details the desktop site has due to design. |
Tried to book a multiple stop trip on the new site -guess what, it redirected to the old one.
The IT manager's bonus requirements must have been phrased sloppily - obviously it's enough to have the opening page of the new site to be live. |

I can't see myself buying even a simple ticket through mobile these days. All these mobile-first systems seems to be bloated, with a design that never fits the screen. But I have fond memories of Malmö Aviation and their very early mobile booking system ... on WAP. The design was brilliantly simple, much like the "Navi-key" on Nokia 3110. I bought many a tickets on that platform. Then again, it was like a 3-step process; Choose from 4 origins, Choose from 4 destination, Choose ticket-type/price and that was it. Like 4 clicks from app start to ticket issued. You could do it while running through the departure hall. Perhaps you are on to something here - maybe the strategy behind mobile first is to avoid being subject to the rigorous comparisons most people do before buying. |
I am not even a millennial, or younger, but I have bought tix via apps. Quite a few times. Have also regretted doing it :) (ended up buying 50% earning tix on CX because app didn't show the 150E more expensive 100% earning option)

I try to change seats after taken the first part of the flight, can see new (better) options but canīt change the seats. Is this IT related? Or is this normal?

What kind of itinerary is it? If it's a connecting flight, hence you have checked in to the next, you can't change seats yourself without un- and re-checking in. If it's a simple return flight or a stopover, it's probably AY IT again.

Itīs the first leg of the return flight.
in other words, you can always checkin a whole itinenary at 36T but you can only take seats for the first leg, not second or third, which will open only when 36T had passed for those legs and then you can recheckin and choose seats IME |
