Not so efficient.
Thirsty DC-10, 13hrs flight time and max 215 pax on board.

When those days are back again?

Before AY aquired the DC-10-30ER for the NRT route (operated twice a week!), they had just two DC-10s. The only scheduled destinations were JFK and LAX, so many DC-10 flights were 345-pax charters. (When did BKK move from DC-8 with a fuel stop in TAS to direct DC-10?) The seating was converted overnight from charter to scheduled and vice versa as needed.

Early 1980s F seats probably weren't horizontal lie-flat seats, so in that respect, todays J seat is better. Catering was probably a lot better back then. And wasn't Y seat pitch traditionally 34" on longhauls?

Why that long? The DC-10 would not be significantly slower than modern airliners. Did they have to go around Russian airspace?

Sure did. They flew over the North Pole (handing out certificates to pax) and down the Bering Strait. Most airlines made a stop in Anchorage.

I flew this on the NRT-HEL route back in 1987. Only really remember two things...the smoke coming through to economy from Business class smokers and the cool 'you've been to the North Pole' certificates which they gave out. Unfortunately cant't find it any more.

Oh, for the moment I thought I could explore Dubai for once with a flatbed flight since I cannot endure the AY lousy seat in 6 hours. If the pricing was lucrative. But 8500AED? Promotional 5500AED is still 1200€ around. Njeaah, I pass...

That map nicely shows that Hawaii would be not much further beyond that polar route

You can even do that with AY points soon. HEL-(KEF)-ANC on KF and ANC-HNL on AS. I flew the reverse route saves quite a bit of BiS time.

Interesting picture, but is their Twitter team manned by ex ski jumpers? That's pretty embarrassing English to be official published copy for an international airline.

Sorry, short-circuited brain. FI (Icelandair) is what I meant, of course.

The prices ex-HEL are similar to AY's. Check the dedicated thread: OT: FZ starting HEL
Y €315 and J €1000.
