I'm going to be flying LAX-JFK-HEL on AA/FA, staying for a few house in HEL and then taking a HEL-LED flight to St. Petersburg.

I am Gold on AA, will that give me a baggage allowance equal a FinnAir Plus member?

If AA tags all your bags from LAX-LED, then you'll get whatever baggage allowance AA wants to grant you as an AA Gold. If AY ends up having to tag your bags at some point, then you're going to have to deal with AY's baggage allowance limits as a regular passenger.

Based on many personal experiences I'd say it's down to the agent you'll get at LAX. AA/AY do not exchange elite luggage allowance details with each other so to be safe I'd stick to what is allowed in your ticket. For the record, the fact is that there's no alliance status based luggage allowance within OW, period.

Thanks to everyone for the quick response.

I am flying on two separate tickets. I called the AA desk and they stated that they can deliver the baggage all the way to LED despite the fact that it's two tickets. I called FA and the rep stated that I would have to recheck my bags in Helsinki. The flights are about 4-5 hours apart. What is the general policy of AA and FinnAir regarding baggage? Is this something that will be determined by the AA agent at LAX?

Am I better off checking in for the 2nd ticket (HEL-LED) online, at JFK or is this something that can be done by AA agent at LAX? Thanks again.

If I get your idea correct, you travel in whY and you want to check in more than 20kg at LAX and get that tagged all the way to LED (AA LAX-JFK + AY JFK-HEL-LED)? If that's the case and you want to take benefit of your AA Gold luggage allowance with American, then by all means try to check in everything through to LED at LAX. Like I said above, there's no such thing as OW status based luggage allowance so if you claim you bag(s) at JFK/HEL you're forced to play with AY allowance (as GUWonder stated above), based purely on your class of travel and/or you Finnair Plus status. AA Gold will, in theory, do you no good after LAX.

I hope this clarifies your positition.

Also bear in mind: you'll have the AY allowance for class of travel on the return.

I don't know about Ruby, but my Oneworld Emerald ALWAYS gives me double allowance of 40 kilos.

Really? Not because of your AYPlus Gold benefit?

There is NO OW baggage benefit for elites which I can find reference to on the OW website. Individual OW-member airlines reward their own Elites with their own baggage benefits. If you are receiving such because of OWE I suggest you share the listed benefit reference so others can likewise benefit (not me, I'm mere Ruby!)

We are talking about two different cases here. Individual OW airlines all have their own luggage policies any many of them DO give extra allowance to their own status member and also to top tiers from other OW airlines. Does this mean there is an official alliance wide status based luggage policy/allowance? No.

AY Ruby can check in 40kg with AY but will BA allow the same in SYD for the same passenger when flying from SYD to LHR in BA whY? Absolutely no and this is the point of this thread.

Suprisingly notciced that AY do allow 1 extra
Just checked their website. At least now they seem to allow 2 x 23 kg for Ruby. Is this just AY or maybe something more common throughout the Alliance?

As said by many in multiple threads across FT over the years:

OW does not have allliance wide luggage allowance for elites. Everything is based on ticket and/or individual airlines having their own policies for class of travel and/or airline/OW status.

It's all part of the "seamless travel experience" first promoted by the airlines when the alliances were formed!!
