In those cases, you just pay cash if the points rates are too high. The point that was being made is that hotels in Asia offer stronger quality and experience for less cash (often far less). I have had far better service at "mid-tier" hotels in Asia than the highest tier hotels in the US (ex. Park Hyatt New York).
This article in question focuses on US stays for the most part - but there is a consideration for maintaining status so that you can fully enjoy Elite benefits outside of the US, such as in Asia (or somewhat Europe). What is “mid tier” and what is “high tier” are both defined, in my opinion, by Category Placement. So to me “Mid Tier” is Category 3 to 5, “High Tier” is 6-7, and “Ultimate Tier” is Category 8. The problem with Category placement is that it’s based almost entirely on ADR which doesn’t account for quality, full service and so on. I think Hyatt Centric Times Square is a prime example of this as it’s currently a Category 6, but it’s definitely not a full service property and I’m sure one would not have an amazing experience there if comparing it to a comparably priced property in Asia. Overall it’s no secret that service standards in Asia are much higher, this is a well known fact. A friend recently stayed with Hyatt in Vietnam, and South Korea as a lowly Discoverist on paid stays (unfortunately couldn’t gift any GoH benefits since paid stays can only receive it starting in 2025) and he even commented on the vastly difference experience staying with Hyatt in Asia compared to the US, without any Globalist treatment. And again I think the blogger is an idiot if they were “scrambling to retain status” as there was actually 3 different challenges offered in 2023 to get or retain Globalist status, all for 20 nights. |

And my counter point is that many Asian properties such as the one mentioned PH Seoul with their current pricing should be in a lower category. It’s not just one week or month checked it’s several weeks and months over a 2 year span.

I also dont like the owner's views on a lot of things - he spreads a lot of Sinophobia and acts as if he knows China but doesn't. I really dislike it when bloggers spread hate about China |
Fear of china and things Chinese. Sino is the prefix that denotes China.

Criticism yes, but never anything fearful. |

There's no reason to call someone an idiot. If they had no intention of staying with Hyatt again, they would not look to take advantage of a challenge. I also wasn't looking to maintain Globalist status earlier this year due to negative stay experiences last year and early this year. However, I decided to switch my decision later in the year, causing me to "scramble" and prioritize Hyatt more than I would normally in the last couple of months. By your logic, I'm a big idiot.
