A very good NYT article about the move to travel blog monetization.

You don't make any money with travel blogs, though. I read a report from a London meet-up of 'proper' travel bloggers, including some of the big UK ones, focussed on blog monetisation, and no one there admitted to earning more than £8,000 ($12,000) per year. That is peanuts in the miles and points sphere.

The real issue with travel blogs is lack of engagement from readers. Do you actually know anyone who travels a lot for leisure who actually reads travel blogs? I have never read one.

Travel blogs are as boring as reading a strangers' facebook posts or trip report! @:-)

And as useful as a points and miles credit card post.

When I need travel advice, I get more than I need here on FlyerTalk or on Trip Adviser.

The bigger issue, of course, is how monetization of blogs affects content. We have certainly gnashed our teeth over the monetization of points and miles blogs here. I'm at the point where I don't take any information from blogs on its face. If I find something on a blog that seems appealing, I am compelled to research it myself before acting on it.

I think that should be standard operating procedure when taking advice from any blog. Indeed, I do that for any source these days, including official ones.

Maybe I picked a bad day to visit FT again. I guess 3 months wasn't enough
What is a 'click' worth these days?

4 ad units per page (of which 2 are 'above the fold') should get you a touch under 1c per page view in total on desktop, less on mobile.

So a MILLION clicks gets $10k?

No one is getting rich on clicks, I guess.

Sell them card conversions!
