A few of us are planning a short 4 night trip to Prague in Jan right after New years. Any suggestions on where to stay, things to do and places to eat. We are all 30 something single.

Most of these will be found in any decent guide book anyway.
a) Visit Prague Castle
b) Stroll across the Charles Bridge at sunset ( bring some warm clothes, can be very cold)
b) Have coffee and pastry at Opera house cafe.
d) Visit the Ghetto in particular the unique raised ( by burying deseased in levels on top of earlier buried) Jewish cemetery.
e) Visit Wencelas Square - Prague's "Champs Elysess" and the Old Town Square including a viewing of the Horological clock

Restaurants:
Pravda ( when you need a break from Czech food ) - try and get a seat upstairs.
Kampa Park - next to Charles Bridge
and one other place Zovoinice??? housed on the upper floors of a 16th century bell tower ( you dine just below the bells, dont worry they wont ring during dinner ) pretty unique - fare was Czech lots of game etc.
Ask you hotel concierge location was near the train station/Wencelas Sq.

I stayed at the Hilton back in '03 since I had points for a GLON award. I think I was Gold at the time which put me on their top floor with club lounge access (forgot what they called it).

In any case, the lounge was great - free drinks (alcoholic and otherwise), appetizers, and internet access all day. Check in and check out were also there.

It's a little out of the way, but still within walking distance from the center of town and a great alternative if you get on this floor.

Things to do - drinking beer (pivo) is a big activity in Prague, and Czech is one of the few places left where absinthe is still legal. Definitely check out the major historical/cultural sites - the castle, bridges, etc.

Food is nothing to write home about. Try the borscht and other local dishes, but Prague wasn't memorable for me for anything I ate.

I had two stays at the Prague Hilton around Easter this year and got upgraded to the Executive floor. The lounge IMHO was one Hiltons best in Europe ( better than the Cavalieri or the Paris Hiltons)
The hotel is now completing an extensive refurbishment.

I have to disagree with you regarding the food ( but then there is not much I dont enjoy in the food department )
Czech food like most Eastern European cusines tend to hearty and meat and game based which IMHO cant be all bad

The Hilton has just opened a very nice restaurant called the Chop House and I had the Pig Knuckle entree there, which was the size of a small ham and one the most delicious roasted pork dish I have ever eaten. ^

The Hilton is pretty decent. It had a better liquor selection than the Cavalieri, but service wasn't better, and I liked the breakfast much more in Rome. The lounge is smoking in the evening, or I should say 1/2 of it is smoking, but quickly gets unbearable even if you're in the nonsmoking section.

The construction noise during the day got a bit annoying. As a diamond I got the exec floor, a plate of fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine. It looked like a normal King room, so nothing special room-wise.

I spent a bit over two weeks in PRG, and found it to be a nice city to relax in. The public transportation system is great, non-touristy places are affordable to eat at (mostly in the $5-$10 range excluding liquor). You can go to the opera house and see a nice performance from $2-$60.

I can't say that I like Wencelas Square too much. Too many hawkers, expensive restaurants and junk merchandise.

Apartments could be very reasonable at that time, so consider them.

If you are interested in seeing some sights, try several walking tours.

The pub tours are fun, and can include a good dinner.

Prices for beer near the town center are bloated.

Shop for anything that you need at Tesco, not the small tourist stores.

Ride up to the castle on the trams, and walk down. Get a map with the tram numbers on the streets. It's priceless. If you will use the trams a lot, consider the Prague Card.

First thing is GET A GUIDEBOOK!!!

Prague is the one city I've been to that I neeeded a book. You could spend 2 days just wandering around old town and the jewish quarter. The castle is between a half day and a day depending on how long you stay at everything.

We stayed at the hotel Julian. If you choose to stay there make sure you get a room in the back. The front is pretty loud with trucks and cars. There is a restaurant called the Olympia near the hotel. We stopped there three times for meals and every one was better than the last.

Beer is cheap!!! I mean real CHEAP!! For 10 euros you could drink most of the night and leave with change.

The Marriott Prague usually shows up on Priceline for around $100 USD/night. A steal. Location is great and is half a block from where the minibus (from the airport) stops.

You can usually get the Prague Hilton for 125E, if you have the right corp code.
