Munich-Austria-Prague itinerary

Wanted to get peoples thoughts on our itinerary. See if I'm missing anything or trying to pack in to much.

Flying into Munich from USA West Coast on Feb 28th and spending first night in Munich by the main train station. Next morning have a Hertz rental and leaving Munich to see Neuschwanstein Castle. From the castle head into Austria and stay in Innsbruck for two nights. Next night at Aqua Dome 1 hr SW of Innsbruck. The following 2 nights are in Salzburg. Day trip to Hallstatt. Drop the car off across the border in Germany. Train to Vienna. 2 nights in Vienna. Train to Prague for 3 nights there. Fly out on the 11th from Prague to AMS. Overnight at airport and then fight back to USA on the 12th.

With my wife, a friend, and a 2 1/2 year old.

^

To add to ToGo's quote: you need the Stamp before you enter Austria. The Austrian cops will be waiting at every major border road crossing. You can get it at a German gas station before entering Austria.

Sounds like a great trip! Have fun!

I believe they are included in our reservation. Using Hertz and was planning on using my Amex and their premium car insurance.

Instead of renting a car for the whole time I'm thinking of just doing the car from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany one way to see the castle and then take the train to Innsbruck. The more I thought about it why am I renting a car for 6 or 7 days. I can train from Innsbruck to Salzburg. I'll do a day rental as well in Salzburg to go see Hallstatt.

I didn't even think about driving in the Alps being a challenge...considering I live in Phoenix, AZ as well. Not really used to the snow driving.

You can also use the Austrian BB railway Company. There are trains that only take 2 hours and 22 minutes

Consider it! Dark, windy roads in snow with a child in the car while driving cross-border in the Alps? The public transportation system in Germany and Austria is so well developed that it's really unnecessary unless you like adventure or stress.

By the way, there are more-than-hourly trains direct from Munich to Garmisch...90 minutes.

I'll definitely use BB for my inter-Austria travel. Much cheaper that Bahn.de on those routes.

Instead of driving, I'd be using the Bayern ticket heavily: http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm

I'd use a car for Neuchwanstein and maybe Hallstatt at most.
