OP again. For anyone who may be doing a similar itinerary I thought I'd pass along our experience. We ended up bidding and getting an upgrade on the outbound to AUH. On arrival we cleaned up in the lounge and then took a taxi to the St Regis where we left all of our bags with the bell desk. We then left to stroll and have dinner for a few hours. We returned, cleaned up and called a taxi for the return to the airport with a 1.5 hour stop at the Mosque to see/visit at night. It all worked perfectly--didn't have to worry about bag retrieval or timing at the airport. It cost a few extra dollars but was well worth it.

Too many people ask for advice and don't share what actually happened in situations like this that can help others. This just helped me on a long connection. Thanks

Good afternoon! I am flying AMS-JNB with Etihad next month. I am not sure if the question has been asked before but I was wondering which lounge you can access now that Aspire in AMS is closed?
