EY Charging for most Y seat allocations from 15th July!

Just received another inspiring email from EY. "Enhance your Economy Class journey".

Introducing Standard Seats in Economy - I thought most seat in Y were already standard!! You can now reserve your seat for a small fee up to 24 hours before departure; free within 24 hours. Not sure how that affects those of us who check in 48 hours out.... There'll be an almighty rush at t- 23:59 to swap seats!! Not much of an Enhancement IMHO!!

Choose the perfect seat in Economy Class

If you are travelling on an Economy Deal, Saver or Classic fare, you can reserve your seat in advance for a small fee.

Guarantee your favourite seat, whether you prefer window, aisle or a row of seats together. You can secure your Standard Seat up to 24 hours before you fly.

Within 24 hours of departure, all Economy Class guests can choose available seats for free. Otherwise, we will automatically allocate you a seat.

Just saw this email and I am in shock honestly. I feel like this brings EY just another level (or a few levels) lower. Maybe there'll be some hidden benefit for elites to select seats in advance for free like Emirates has.

And they have the cheek to write the subject of the email as: Enhance your Economy Class journey

Not sure how this enhances anything. A once free service now being charged for is not an enhancement in any way for the customer.

I confirmed on Twitter with them that no matter what tier you are, everyone is paying for seat selection. This is a dreadfully poor move by EY.

the bring back caviar in F then charge Y PAX fees to pick seats further out.. and don't even have waivers for status holders within Etihad guest

will all travellers on the same PNR at least be assigned seats together?

EY are just “doing it wrong” in so many ways it’s breathtaking

The airline industry redefined 'enhance' a few years to mean 'we're stripping you of a benefit.' QF are particularly good at using this term.

Honestly that is ridiculous lol. There have been quite a few times that I am always a little bit glad that EY still offered free seat selection in Y, as compared to EK, thinking I would hate if I could not pick my seat if I wasn't an elite. EY did a wonderful job of 'enhancing' that for me.

It seems you just need to hope that when you go to pick seats 24 hours out, you need to be lucky in getting two (or more) seats together. Either that or relying on the kindness of strangers/check-in agents later on to make things work. I figure this is going to be a pain for families traveling together, especially those with younger children!

Bad for everybody. Imagine having to sit next to a young child for 8 hours who is vomiting or misbehaving while the parent is 30 rows back and unable to do anything about it.

If I was that person - I would blame myself for not booking J or bidding for an upgrade.

Indeed a "nice improvement" (I think now we have been "enhanced" too much already), they always follow their neighbor/competitor moves (at least for bad ones I mean) even without having the same strength and appeal, furthermore they did it without any consideration for higher tier members.
I was still considering free seat selection one of the few remaining bonuses of flying EY, at least when traveling with my family in economy, since now out of CGK to Europe the competition on discounted J fares is becoming tough (QR, TK and WY most of the time are now cheaper) in the future not sure I will fly with them again even for my regular solo trips to Italy.
It is clear they are cutting costs tremendously but with this pace they will also cut customers.

Anyone who has flown Ryanair will sympathise with you... Hopefully EY don't follow the FR algorithms.

Booked MAN-DUB-MAN last year for 6 PAX and didn't pay the fee to choose seats - its a 30 minute flight. All 6 PAX seated all over the aircraft rows 2 6 13 14 25 26 and all middle seats bar 2, both directions!!
