Negative Equity?

Hi - 1st post here & a bit in awe ....
In Nov my husband (a Gold Member at that time) used around 80,000 miles to book a UK-NZ return flight for April 2009 as there was a special offer. However, just recently they have put his remaining small mileage balance into negative, -13,782 miles. I'm imagining this is because he has just lost his Gold Status & therefore the bonus offer will no longer be applicable to him - but I'm not sure .... It's a bit annoying as points from his March flight to UK will now have to pay off his debt. We rang Emirates & they said they had made a mistake, but "the boys in the back room had done some tweaking". We can't seem to get any explanation. Has anyone heard of this negative equity before? Many Thanks for your wisdom!

Yes you can go into negative, others have talked about it before.

If the offer was on (I don't recall which offer this was) when your husband was a Gold, then him losing his status should not have any effect on the existing booking.

Could you give details of the offer?

I'd phone Emirates again and get them to tell you the exact reason for the 'tweaking'.

Cheers,
Rick

It sounds like the gold % off that had to be flown by 31st dec
maybe someone didnt realise it was to be flown by then and now wants there 100% pound of flesh
I was actualy 2k short on a booking once and they made me transfer spg pts to get to request the award
then they couldnt deliver the dates
and I was gold.

Yes, I think that was the offer ... if you were a Gold Member redemptions were 15% less or something like that ... but we made the Redemption ourselves online so perhaps there was a "Fly Before" date. I think we will call again & try for a fuller explanation ... maybe it's a useless exercise & we just got it wrong but worthwhile to try I think. Thanks for replying!

I wonder if they gave you 15% for being a Gold, and also 10% for booking online? Maybe they've realised that wasn't supposed to be allowed, and they've now grabbed back the 10%?

A pure guess!

Cheers,
Rick

Have just heard back ... apparently there was a computer error some time ago & my husband was awarded miles on part of a redemption flight, which he shouldn't have. EK say that there were other people affected by this glitch. We have asked for a written explanation just to be sure, as still seems a little surprising ...
