New EK Destinations
I just read on Airliners.net that EK considers MEX as a new destination. If so, that d be a real surprise, I expected them to increase activities in the US first (e.g. LAX, ORD).
Additionally, EK seems to think about expansion to South America (Argentina, Brazil). Anyone has more detail?
Obviously, they re looking for suitable destinations for their A 340s

Before the A340 was launched, they had "confirmed" that services to SFO would be launched the summer of 2004, which was delayed to 2005... but no news on it. YYZ/LAX were the next routes to be started up - with some interest, although no formal statement on ORD, and GRU also being on the top of the list IIRC. Not sure about Argentina though
With the launch of the A380's, they definately will need to start up some more destinations

Cheers

Actually if EK goes to South America, it wouldn't surprise me at all. They fly to every other continent on earth, so why not there? It would be nice to have a direct service to that part of the world (without having to connect via Europe or the U.S.), but I know that MEA eventually stopped its service to Sao Paolo, Brazil as they didn't have the numbers. With EK, I am sure it will be a totally different ball game.

I know someone working in the airline industry in Buenos Aires and for a few months now there are apparently rumours that EK will start flying to EZE sooner or later
What about more European destinations like DUB? That would be cool for the Irish who have to make so many stops to reach Australia or New Zealand.

My wish-list for new EK destinations however are Tokyo (already covered by partner Sri Lankan), Taipei and either Copenhagen or Stockholm.

About two years ago EK applied for a daily nonstop flight DXB-CPT continueing to South America (I cannot recall the destination anymore). Unfortunately, the South Africa authorities did not grant EK traffic rights between DXB and CPT. As far as I know another application for this route has been lodged.

Not that EK has any financial limitations, of course
ARN would also be a great addition

Other's they were considering IIRC:
Berlin, Beijing
What would be good:
More US destinations... NYC is doing great

To compete with Asian carriers on the Europe-Australia routes I think Adelaide (via BKK or SIN due to smaller loads) would be a good addition.
I still think Taipei would complete their Asian network perfectly as it has virtually no European/Middle Eastern carriers other than KLM, and EVA don't serve DXB anymore.

BUENOS AIRES may well have direct flights from the Middle East by this
time next year. Emirates has made serious noises that it would like to
introduce direct services, either non-stop which would mean a 17/18
hour flight, or via South Africa with fifth freedom operations.
Negotiations are said to be going on with the SA authorities who would
appear to be concerned that a similar scenario might emerge to that of
Australia/New Zealand where Emirates are allowed to originate
passengers at both ends of the Tasman Sea crossing, much to the
concern of both Qantas and Air New Zealand.

But what about the political considerations ? Non-Asian carriers wanting to expand services to mainland China would not wish to cause upset (to the mainland Chinese) by starting flights to Taipei.
