Two recent flights with Emirates in J and both times my first-choice meal choice was unavailable. Now, I recognise the constraints involved and I understand that you can't always satisfy everybody's meal choices. But, on both occasions I was near the front of the business-class cabin and far from being the last passenger to make a meal choice.
I might suggest that this could be a case of 'financial tightening'. An almost inedible fish curry is certainly cheaper to produce than a 'Sous-vide flat iron beef steak'.
Cost cutting or what?

You didn't miss out on much with that steak. I had it the other day and left most of it. Although cooked to medium which is fine by me it was hard and dry. Worst piece of beef I've ever had on EK.

Surprising that this happened twice to you. I have never not been successful in getting my first meal choice, be as a Blue, Silver or Gold Skywards member.
On other airlines (notably BA, but others too), it seems the norm, unless you are a height status FF.

Indeed, the steakless flight was ex-DXB although a fortnight earlier I was similarly disappointed on the outward leg from MAN.
I would say, however, that the crew yesterday on the EK19 into MAN were really excellent.
