The extra 2 months is just for you to continue to enjoy some Gold benefits (Lounge access, priority baggage, etc.), even though you'll be a silver on 1-Jan-14

While you can use any 13 month period, the 13 month rule does not work in the way you describe. To get back to gold in 5/2014, you'll need to clock 50K tier miles between 01-05-2013 and 31-05-2014 - that's your 13 month period.
I thought the extra 2 months entitled me to ALL the gold benefits in those 2 months (including the extra miles), but my silver membership would be for 10 months (1 March 14 until 31 Dec 14. Or am I wrong?
Yes, I got my dates mixed up with the 13 month rule - you are correct.

You silver membership will also be for 12 months, 1-Jan-14 to 31-Dec-14, after which you will drop to blue if you don't make either Silver or Gold, though your silver card will be valid for 14 months from 1-Jan-14 to 28-Feb-15.

My Son traveled on Emirates during December 2012, I was unable to register him at that time for Sky Surfers as the information was not clear. I was able to finally register him now by sending a scanned copy of his application. Can I claim miles for the travel done in December 2012?

You can try to make a claim but the rule is that the travel must have occurred in the three months prior to the claim I think and so unless you can make a strong case for leniency your claim is likely to be denied. Good luck!

My flight was booked on Qantis website (FRA-DXB-MEL-AKL) all on Emirates metal. THe FRA-DXB and DXB-FRA portions showed emirate flight numbers on the booking reference but the DXB-MEL-AKL and AKL-MEL-DXB had Qantis codeshare numbers for the flights. After some back and forth with Emirates customer service I managed to get the Skymiles for all flights but tier miles for only the FRA-DXB and DXB-FRA portion. Emirates has said that I am not entitled to tier miles because it is qantis code share even though it was all Emirates metal. Is that right? All boarding passes showed my Emirates number.

Seems to be. Tier miles are earned only on flights with an EK flight number showing on your BP.

As an example the boarding pass from DXB-MEL shows my Emirates frequent flyer number and flight as EK406 and directly under that QF8406. Does that change your answer?

EK406 may just be showing the metal you are flying on and QF8406 you actual flight number. What flight were you actually booked on in your ticket? You can read more information here:
http://www.emirates.com/pt/english/h...?faqId=1112930
...Tier Miles will not be available on any flights with a QF flight number.

Thought this was a good writeup on Skywards points and where to get most points for your buck.
