Transfering in bangkok

Hi,

I am travelling DXB to BKK and connecting onto a Thai airways flight to Krabi. Now, given the TA operates on behalf of Emirates (i) will I be able to send my luggage right through (ii) do I have to pass through customs at Bangkok? (someone told me that this is compulsory...surely not?)

You should be able to transfer the luggage all the way through, I recently flew into BKK then transited to a TA flight and luggage seemed to arrive ok!

The TA flights are in the domestic terminal, so you have a reasonably long walk through, you do also have to clear immigration/customs on your way through. This is not as bad as it sounds as it is normally quite an informal process.

Hope you have a great trip

sorry, another question! When returning from Krabi through Bangkok I am connecting onto an EK flight to Hong Kong - in this case will I need to collect my luggage and re-checkin at Bangkok?

Not sure about this one, I did a stop over in Bangkok for a couple of nights on the way back. You could always try and post something in the Thai Air forum and see if anyone knows.

Sorry I could not help more. Hope you have a great trip

Related to this, I have booked an Emirates return flight from Paris to Phuket, via Dubai and Bangkok, The ticket states my luggage allowance to be 30kg on the Paris-Dubai-Bangkok legs, and return, but only 20kg on the Bangkok-Phuket-Bangkok legs. In practice can I ignore this or will my luggage be off-loaded at Bangkok on the way out and possibly questioned/limited to 20kg. I am particularly concerned about the start of the return from Phuket to Bangkok.

You'll have to stay within the restrictions of airline that you are flying to and from BKK to HKT or face the harsh fines for exceeding your baggage limitations.

Since its not going to be a EK aircraft from BKK-HKT I would suggest to pack 20KG for the EK sectors as well (CDG-DXB-BKK) then you'll have no problems on the BKK-HKT-BKK sector.

Cheers!

If your entire itinerary is on EK stock, you would be allowed 30kgs throughout. If they are separate tickets, individual carriers' rules would apply.

It is one ticket, bought online through Emirates all the way through to Phuket from Paris. I was hoping that my luggage would be sent through from Paris to Phuket but I was concerned that they would even bother to mention the 20kg on the Bangkok Phuket leg. Then, on the return, I seem to be stymied concerning the weight as my 1st flight is on a 20kg leg.

In this case, it would be the ticketing carrier's (EK) allowance that should apply. I think it's a bit of a gray area, but you should call EK just to confirm.

I found out from Bangkok Air that they would insist on 20kg. However, if I join their loyalty programme, Flyerbonus, you get an automatic upgrade to 30kg - problem solved.

Incidentally, Flyerbonus are affiliated with Etihad, Air Berlin and Siam Reap as well some a range of hotel, car rental and financial companies.
