Cancellations/changes

After an accident last week I'm going to have to cancel or change on EK itinerary due to leave the UK on 30th April. Given the current ash cloud situation this might be a blessing in disguise, but I want to make sure I chose the best option for me in the circumstances. Insurance should cover any out of pocket costs but I haven't been in touch with them yet. Cancellation is 100, changes 75.
The original flights were booked last year so qualify for the "old" mileage rates. If I change rather than cancel will the new flights qualify for the same? If not, do I have to check for dates when Saver fares will be available before re-scheduling if I want to be sure to get them?
Are there any EK "funnies" I should be aware of while making any new plans given the circumstances?

I was in a similar circumstance a few weeks ago and had to rebook my new flight under present day conditions i.e a mixture of saver & flex flights.

I may also mention that unless you are extremely lucky I would imagine your new flight will be consciderabily more expensive than last years prices. EK's prices have definately gone up and you will earn less miles on most routes as well.

I had one leg left over from a trip I started last year, for which I had to change the date. I was awarded mileage according to the old rules.

I don't think you're looking for a Saver fare. Look for a flex fare.

I'm not sure, but it might be possible for them to waive the change fee under these circumstances.

Thanks guys.

blacknight - you're right about the price, about 80 more expensive in my case although I can get it cheaper with long stopovers (no thanks).

ung1 - you're right, I meant to say Flex fares. It looks like your case is different from mine (and blacknight's) in that you started your trip last year which might have made a difference.
